In the first round of pre-qualifying singles play, the Blue Devils found success with wins from freshman Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Hanna Mar in the first round, despite senior Monica Gorny dropping her bout. Mar also won her second round matchup. Saturday's singles results are as follows:
First Round Pre-Qualifiers - Singles
Goldfeld (Duke) def. DeSimone (USC) 6-2, 6-4
Mar (Duke) def. Scott (Texas) 7-5, 6-4
Januskova (Penn St.) def. Gorny (Duke) 6-1, 6-1
Second Round Pre-Qualifiers - Singles
Mar (Duke) def. Bartnik (Columbia) 7-6(6), 7-6(5)
Lauren Mira (Vanderbilt) def. Goldfeld (Duke) 6-4, 6-0
On Sunday, Mar will take on Maria Fucillo from ACC-rival Virginia for an automatic bid into Tuesday's qualifying round.
Just one pair of Blue Devils played doubles on day one, as freshman Beatrice Capra and Goldfeld picked up a first round victory.

Mary Clayton/Mar (bye)
Tomorrow, Capra and Goldfeld will meet Nebraska's Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt. Clayton and Mar, who received a first round bye, will face off with Memphis' Stefanie Mikesz and Mariya Slupska in second round action.
In the qualifying singles draw, sophomore Rachel Kahan will take on Northwestern's Kate Turvy, while Clayton will face St. Marys' Catherine Isip. In the qualifying doubles draw, Kahan and Gorny will match up with California's Taylor Davis and Annie Goransson. Matches for all qualifying draws will begin Tuesday, Oct. 4.
