DURHAM, N.C. - Duke will send four individuals to Charlottesville, Va. for the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational this weekend.
The tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. The four Blue Devils who will be in action include two seniors and two freshmen. No. 45 Reid Carleton and Jared Pinsky will be joined by newcomers Chris Mengel and Fred Saba.
Carleton and Mengel are both coming off singles championships at the Duke Fab Four Invite last weekend while Carleton, Pinsky and Saba all captured doubles titles in the tournament.
Carleton owns 71 career singles wins and 80 career doubles victories. His 80 wins in doubles is currently tied for 12th most by an individual in school history and five away from cracking the top 10. He has started the 2010-11 season with an undefeated record in both singles (4-0) and doubles (3-0).
Pinsky is one victory shy of his 50th career win. He took fourth place in his singles flight last week with a 2-2 record. His doubles title with Saba was his first career tournament championship.
Mengel earned a tournament title in his first collegiate tournament as he knocked off No. 36 Tripper Carleton of Wake Forest in the semifinals for his first career ranked win. He teamed with David Holland in doubles and the pair reached the finals before losing in a close 9-7 match.
Saba went 3-1 in singles last weekend and finished in third place in his flight. He faced his own teammates in two of his four matches with his only loss coming to Carleton in the semifinals.
There is scheduled to be four draws in both singles and doubles with 16 players in each draw for singles and eight duos in each doubles draw. The complete draws will be released later this evening. Of the 64 singles players, 28 are ranked in the ITA preseason rankings. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
