
Cunha, Mengel & Carleton Win Singles Titles

CARY, N.C. - The Blue Devils came away with a sweep of the singles titles and won five of the six overall championships in the Duke Fab Four Invite this weekend in Cary, N.C.
Duke had an impressive showing on the weekend, posting an 18-8 record in singles with two of the losses coming against teammates. In doubles the Blue Devils were 8-1 overall, including two titles.
Sophomore Henrique Cunha, the No. 2 player in the nation, rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win in the section A finals over No. 57 Ivan Salec of Radford. Cunha has started the season 4-0 and is now 45-6 in his singles career. Cunha picked up his second career tournament singles title as he also won the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational last season.
Freshman Chris Mengel continued his impressive start to his college career with a championship in the B section. He defeated Ivan Machado of South Carolina in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 for his fourth straight win to start the season.
Senior Reid Carleton was one of the most impressive players in the tournament with all four of his section C wins coming in straight sets. He had one of his best matches in the finals against No. 63 Simon Childs of Louisville, losing just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 route. The singles title was the second of Carleton's career. He won the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in 2008.
Two Duke players faced each other in the third place match of section C. Freshman Fred Saba got the best of senior Jared Pinsky for a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory.
Next weekend Duke will split its squad for two tournaments. Some team members will head to the UVA Ranked Plus One Invite in Charlottesville, Va. while others will go to Athens, Ga. for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
