CARY, N.C. - The Blue Devils' men's tennis team won 11 of its 13 matches on the first day of the Duke Fab Four Invite, including victories in all six doubles contests.
The first two rounds of doubles were played on Friday with all three of Duke's doubles teams going undefeated.The No. 1 team in the nation, Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha, breezed to an 8-2 win in the quarterfinals and then defeated Ivan Salec and Thomas Dehean of Radford, 8-5, to move on to the finals of the A section where Reid will face his brother Tripper and Iain Atkinson from Wake Forest.
In section B, Chris Mengel and David Holland teamed up for 8-6 and 8-5 victories to set up a finals contest against Zach Hunter and William Parker of North Carolina. Jared Pinsky and Fred Saba knocked off the No. 2 seed in section C, Louisville's Andrew Carter and Viktor Maksimcuk, 8-5. After another 8-5 win Pinsky and Saba moved into the finals where they take on the top seed in the section.
Duke had seven singles players in action with five moving on to the quarterfinals. Duke's two ranked players won easily as No. 2-ranked Cunha cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stijn Meulemans of Radford and 45th-ranked Carleton lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 route of Wake Forest's Connor Sherwood.
Two freshmen earned wins in their first collegiate matches. Mengel took down Jesus Bandres of East Tennessee State in three sets 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 while Saba claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Harry Menzies of South Carolina.
The Blue Devils also had an upset win as senior Jared Pinsky picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory against No. 68 Atkinson from Wake Forest in section C.
The tournament is being held at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The first serve on Saturday will take place at 9 a.m. as the final round of doubles is played on both the men's and women's side. All matches are free to the public.
