Currie & Harding Named WNBA All-Stars

DURHAM, N.C. - Washington Mystics teammates and former Duke University standouts Monique Currie and Lindsey Harding have been named as replacement players for the WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun game WNBA President Donna Orender announced on Thursday. Currie and Harding will both represent the WNBA squad and were members of Duke's 2006 NCAA Final Four team.
Currie, a fifth-year forward, will fill the spot vacated by the Seattle Storm's Lauren Jackson, who suffered a concussion last Saturday against the Los Angeles Sparks. Harding, a fifth-year guard, will assume the roster spot vacated by the Atlanta Dream's Sancho Lyttle, who also is sidelined with a concussion.
The contest will take place on Saturday, July 10 at 3:30 p.m., on ESPN and will be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.,
The Mystics now have three players participating in the game, including Crystal Langhorne, Washington's leader in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.8 rpg), who was voted to the WNBA squad earlier this week by the league's head coaches.
Currie, who is averaging 14.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, ranks second on the Mystics to Langhorne in both categories. Harding, the first overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft and now in her second season with Washington, leads the Mystics in assists (4.4 apg) and ranks third in scoring (13.2 ppg).
Former Duke National Player of the Year and four-time WNBA All-Star Alana Beard also plays for the Washington Mystics but she is sidelined for the 2010 campaign due to foot injury.
Serving as head coach of the WNBA stars will be Brian Agler of the Seattle Storm, who earned the honor by virtue of his team having the best winning percentage through games of July 1. Nancy Darsch, the lead assistant under Agler with the Storm, will serve in the same capacity with the WNBA team during The Stars at the Sun.
The USA Basketball Women's National Team is coached by Geno Auriemma, University of Connecticut Women's Basketball Coach. His assistants are Doug Bruno (head coach, DePaul University), Jennifer Gillom (head coach, Los Angeles Sparks) and Marynell Meadors (head coach, Atlanta Dream).
Both coaching staffs will name their respective starting lineups at a later date.
