DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University freshman Lindy Duncan took time away from practicing at the Rod Myers Practice Center this week to sit down with GoDuke.com. Duncan, a product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has stepped in during her rookie season and been Duke's most consistent golfer. She has twice been named ACC Golfer of the Month, while being ranked No. 7 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
The Blue Devils head to Sedgefield Country Club this weekend to compete in the ACC Championship from April 16-18.
GoDuke.com: How excited are you to be head to Sedgefield and your first ACC Championship?
Lindy Duncan: Yeah, very excited. It's going be really fun. I'm just trying to have a good practice round there on Thursday and learn the course as best as we can and just try to play really smart golf.
GD: How do you think this team has progressed, with having three freshmen starting, a very young team and won two tournaments?
LD: I think we're doing great. The tournaments we won have been really big. Just the whole atmosphere, we work really hard and this team has a lot of hard workers, so it's cool that we can motivate each other to work harder and always get better. It's always nice to be around the girls and practicing together, so it's a good atmosphere.
GD: Has the team grown very tight as the season has progressed?
LD: Yeah, on the course we try to help each other as much as we can. We are very competitive with each other but at the same time we want everyone to succeed. So it's fun.
GD: For you, how much of an adjustment was it for you from high school or AJGA tournament to college golf?
LD: It wasn't too bad, a lot of the girls that were already in college I've been friends with for a long time through the AJGA and everything so it wasn't too much of a transition, but learning a lot through playing is very important.
GD: How much are you enjoying Duke and academic and athletic life?
LD: I'm really enjoying it, the first semester was rough academically for me by just getting used to studying and time management was real hard. But the second semester has been so much less stressful. Picking the right classes, talking to the professors and going to basketball games. It's been a blast; I wouldn't trade it for anything.
GD: So what did you think of the whole Men's Basketball winning the national championship?
LD: It was absolutely insane. I went to Cameron with almost all the students. And after they won, I was screaming so loud, I thought I was going to lose my voice the next day because I screamed so much. But it was amazing. I can't believe they did it. I was just so proud to be part of the school.
GD: How much would you like to do that for the women's golf team?
LD: Oh that would be a dream come true.
GD: What kind of things have you been working with your game?
LD: I've been working on a lot of…pretty much everything. I'm just trying to keep everything consistent and well-rounded. My game doesn't have one weakness. In the beginning of the year I was struggling with putting but right now it's just keeping everything sharp.
GD: You've had a solid year all-year and played really well. Finally, at the Liz Murphey you had your first win. How happy were you with that?
LD: That was really cool. It was just an amazing week, I learned a lot from it. My mom and sister were actually there to watch, so I got to see them and they got to see me win my first college event. I won by a good amount, just having the lead is hard and I learned a lot about having the lead, holding on to the lead and trying to extend it. That was a great tournament and I will remember it for awhile.
