DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University junior Jasmine Thomas has received yet another All-America accolade as the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced on Wednesday its 10-member All-America squad.
Thomas and the sixth-ranked Blue Devils had their season come to a close on Monday with a 51-48 loss to 14th-ranked Baylor in the Memphis Regional Final in Memphis, Tenn. Thomas registered 16 points in the loss and was named to the Memphis Regional All-Tournament team.
Other members of the team were Jayne Appel (Stanford), Tina Charles (Connecticut), Alysha Clark (Middle Tennessee), Victoria Dunlap (Kentucky), Kelsey Griffin (Nebraska) Jantel Lavender (Ohio State), Maya Moore (Connecticut), Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford) and Monica Wright (Virginia). The player of the year was Tina Charles, coach of the year was Connie Yori of Nebraska and the freshman of the year went to Brittney Griner of Baylor.
A native of Fairfax, Va., Thomas had a breakout junior campaign as she was named one of 12 finalists for the State Farm Wade Trophy, Naismith and John R. Wooden candidate for National Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP, first team All-ACC, Nancy Lieberman Award nominee, Kay Yow Award as the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America.
Thomas joins only Alison Bales, Alana Beard, Chante Black, Monique Currie, Lindsey Harding and Georgia Schweitzer as other USBWA selections in the past for the Blue Devils.
Thomas led Duke to its sixth ACC Championship and a share of the ACC Regular Season title, after averaging 16.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.8 steals on the year. The 5-11 guard started all 36 contests and led the Blue Devils with 11 games with 20 or more points scored.
A native of Fairfax, Va., Thomas had one of the best all-around seasons in Duke history as she became only the second Blue Devil to notch 100 steals in a season along with Alana Beard. Thomas also ranked in seven other Duke single-season categories -- 63 three-pointers (4th), 577 points (7th), 1,168 minutes (1st), 532 field goal attempts (2nd), 177 three-point field goal attempts (5th), 146 assists (8th) and 100 steals (4th).
Duke closed the season with a 30-6 overall record, which marked the eighth 30-win season in Blue Devil history and the first under Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie.
