Four singles matches were decided by two games or less with two of those going into a tiebreak as the Gators captured their ninth win of the season. Duke falls to 10-2 on the year.
The Gators got off to a quick start, jumping out in front convincingly at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The third-ranked pair of Marritt Boonstra and Allie Will outlasted Duke's top tandem of Ellah Nze and Amanda Granson, 8-3. At No. 2, Florida's duo of Lauren Embree and Anastasia Revzina clinched the point with an 8-4 victory against Duke's 24th-ranked pair of Elizabeth Plotkin and Reka Zsilinszka. The third doubles match was not finished.
Florida was able to carry some of that momentum over into singles play as the Gators opened matches with 5-0 leads in the first set on courts two and three. The remaining four matches remained close through the first set with Duke looking to steal four wins.
The Gators made it a 2-0 match as Will handed Duke's Plotkin her first loss of the season, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. The No. 1 singles match was next off the court with Florida's 22nd-ranked Lauren Embree earning a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Nze.
On court four, Granson looked like she had the first set under control before Revzina mounted a great comeback to take the first set 7-5. Revzina closed out her match in the next set, earning a 7-5, 6-4 victory to clinch the win for the Gators.
The Gators' Claire Bartlett continued Florida's bid for a sweep with a win in the sixth singles spot, defeating Mary Clayton 6-4, 7-5.
In search of Duke's first points of the match, Monica Gorny headed into a 10-point tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 7-5, 4-6 with Caroline Hitimana. However, Hitimana prevailed in the tiebreaker 11-9 to make it a 6-0 score in favor of Florida.
After falling 6-0 in the first set, Zsilinszka battled Boonstra shot for shot in the second set. Even at six games apiece, Boonstra earned the win in the tiebreak to emerge victorious at 6-0, 7-6 (10).
The Blue Devils will take a short break before taking on William & Mary and Notre Dame in Puerto Rico on March 11 and March 12, respectively.
