DURHAM, N.C. - For the third time in the last four weeks, Duke freshman Kyrie Irving was named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Irving led Duke to a 2-0 record last week to earn the weekly award for the second straight week. The West Orange, N.J. native averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in the two wins.
In the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Irving tallied 31 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals in an 84-79 win over No. 6 Michigan State. His 31 points are tied for second most by a freshman in school history and just the fourth 30-point game by a Blue Devil freshman. He made 8-of-12 from the field, 2-of-3 from the three-point line and 13-of-16 from the free throw line. His 13 made free throws are a Duke freshman record while his 16 attempts are tied for most in a game.
Irving followed up his big performance against Michigan State with his second 20-point game against Butler at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J. He scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half and shot 6-of-10 from the field, 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 at the foul line in the game.
On the season Irving ranks third among all NCAA freshman with 17.4 points per game, fifth with an .896 free throw percentage and fifth with 5.1 assists per game.
Duke's next game will be in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wednesday at 9 p.m. against Bradley. The game will be televised by espn2.
