Wrestling Heads to Las Vegas for Cliff Keen Invitational

DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team will make its longest trip of the season this weekend when it travels to Las Vegas for the 29th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational on Dec. 3-4. The action begins at 11 a.m., (EST) on Dec. 3 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Tickets are available for the entire weekend or single sessions. An all-session pass is $40 for adults and $30 for students. A ticket for the preliminary rounds is $15 for adults and $12 for students, while the championship finals are $20 and $15, respectively. Tickets will be sold on the first day of competition.
Nine wrestlers will compete for the Blue Devils in the event in nine different weight classes. Freshman Brandon Gambucci will make his collegiate debut at 125 pounds. The native of Mansfield, Ohio was a two-time All-America selection in high school after earning a spot in the state tournament three times.
Senior captain Mike Bell looks to improve his record at 141 pounds after registering a runner-up finish at the NC State Open. Bell is 7-5 overall on the year. At 149 pounds will be sophomore Christopher Piccolella with a 3-5 overall record. He recently took fifth at the Keystone Classic, posting a 4-2 record in the event.
Rookie Ryan Harding will line up at 157 pounds with a 9-5 mark. He owns two top-four finishes this season, earning third place at the Citadel Open and fourth at the NC State Open. Redshirt freshman David Henry is aiming for his third top-four placing of the season. Sporting a 10-5 overall record at 165 pounds, the Dallas native recently took third at the NC State Open.
Leading the team with an impressive 15-2 record, redshirt freshman Bret Klopp will anchor the lineup at 174 pounds. Klopp has placed among the top three in all three events and leads the team with 10 falls. Five of his previous seven victories have come by pins, including one in just 29 seconds.
Redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo heads into the event with a 9-5 mark at 184 pounds. Bencomo recently took fourth at the Keystone Classic and second at the NC State Open. Freshman Brian Self looks to resume his winning ways at 197 pounds. He finished third at the Citadel Open and fourth at the NC State Open and holds an 8-5 overall record.
Rounding out the lineup at heavyweight will be Andrew Fulk. The redshirt sophomore is 2-6 overall on the year.
Duke will take a short break for final exams following the event. The Blue Devils return after a break to the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30
