
Blue Devils Out at National Indoors

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Friday marked the end of the fall for the Blue Devils' men's tennis team as Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha lost in doubles and singles at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
At the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the site of the U.S. Open, the Duke duo started the day with an 8-5 loss in doubles to Georgia Tech's No. 43-ranked pair of Kevin King and Juan Spir. The loss came in the quarterfinals and marked the second time the two Blue Devils have lost in the quarterfinal round or further of grand slam tournaments this fall. They end the fall season with a 12-2 record.
The two players also lost in singles, which both players posted a 13-2 record this fall, only losing in the two grand slam events. Cunha won his first set but was overcome in the last two for a loss to No. 10 Austen Childs of Louisville 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Carleton fell in straight sets to the higher-ranked No. 21 Rhyne Williams of Tennessee 6-1, 6-3.
Cunha was 7-1 against ranked opponents and claimed singles titles at the Duke Fab Four Invite and ITA Carolina Regionals. Carleton won the singles championship at the Duke Fab Four Invite and Virginia Ranked Plus One Invitational. He also reached the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships. As a doubles team, the two players won the championship at the Duke Fab Four Invite and ITA Carolina Regional while making the semifinals of the All-Americans and the quarterfinals of National Indoors. Carleton also won a doubles title at the Virginia Ranked Plus One Invitational with Chris Mengel.
Overall Duke had one of its best fall seasons in recent years, winning five singles titles and four doubles championships. A Duke player won a singles and doubles championship at three separate tournaments. As a team the Blue Devils had a .763 winning percentage in doubles (29-9) and a .656 winning percentage in singles (61-32).
The spring season will begin January 8 for the Blue Devils when the men's and women's teams head to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Hills Family Winter Trip. The men take on the University of Hawai'i at 4 p.m. (ET).
