DURHAM, N.C.-- I personally cannot believe that it is already November. Where did the season go? It seems like just yesterday that I was shuffling back and forth from RDU, picking up wide-eyed freshmen for preseason, welcoming them to a new (and possibly more humid) chapter of their lives.
But that was three months ago. We are now officially in the final third of our season: post-season play. The temperature has significantly dropped and everyone has more or less settled into life at Duke. I think it's amazing how far this team has come since August. Collectively, we've grown closer, matured as a unit, and learned a lot about ourselves in practice and games.
Our non-conference games are over and ACC play drew to a close with a 3-5 loss against UNC, but we are now set to kick off against Maryland at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 3 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
It's the do-or-die time of the season because other than the game at hand, no more games are guaranteed. Sure, TopDrawer Soccer predicts we will make the NCAA Tournament (and we probably will), but I think we play best when we adopt the mindset of a “desperate team.”
A few weeks ago, there was a time when we were unsure about our own admittance into the ACC Tournament. We weren't getting the results we'd expected, being such a deep and talented team, but instead of looking for excuses, we kept battling. Three crucial victories propelled us forward in the standings and now we find ourselves as the seventh seed in an unbelievably competitive conference tournament.
I couldn't be more excited about our draw. The ACC is arguably the most competitive women's soccer league in the country and in this tournament, no team is weak. We tied the Terps in College Park back in September, but I think we've come a long way since then. Not to mention, we are very fortunate that the ACC Tournament is hosted our home state, so other than a van ride to Cary, no serious travel is required.
If we play our game, capitalize on our offensive opportunities, and outwork the Terrapins for 90 minutes, there is no doubt in my mind that we will be back in action on Friday for the second round.
Come out and support DWS at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 3 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. as we take on the Maryland Terrapins for the second time this season. As always, we appreciate your support and Go Duke!
