Klopp Captures NC State Open Title

RALEIGH, N.C.-Duke University redshirt freshman Bret Klopp captured his first career tournament title to lead the Blue Devils at the NC State Open today at Reynolds Coliseum. Klopp posted two falls and a major decision en route to a 4-0 record in the 174-pound division. Overall, the Blue Devils had a strong day, finishing with three runner-up results and seven top-four placements.

Klopp brought home top honors at 174 pounds, while senior Michael Bell took second at 141 pounds, senior AJ Guardado was the runner-up in the 149-pound bracket and redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo finished second at 184 pounds.

Fresh off of a third-place showing at The Citadel Open, Klopp opened the day with a major decision and followed that with two falls, including one in just 1:17, to reach the championship bout. In his final match of the day, the native of Lander, Wyo., outlasted Stephen Doty, 9-8 to grab his first tournament championship.

At 141 pounds, Bell posted a pair of major decisions in his opening two matches to earn a spot in the semifinal round. The senior captain battled to a tough 8-5 decision in the semifinal before narrowly falling to Darrius Little of NC State, 5-2 in the title bout. Bell is now 6-3 overall on the season.

Guardado was equally successful from the 149-pound bracket as he registered two falls in his opening matches. He picked up a big 5-1 double overtime decision to put him through to the semifinal round and edged Dave Ebbott of Virginia to earn a chance at the title. Going up against UNC Greensboro's Ivan Lopouchanski in the final, Guardado battled hard, but came up just short in a 4-2 decision.

Bencomo rounded out Duke's runner-up finishes for the day at 184 pounds. The native of Phoenix, Ariz., cruised through to the title match with two major decisions and a fall. He outscored his first two opponents 34-12 and pinned the third in 2:23. In the title bout, Bencomo suffered his first pin of the year in a loss to Andrew Saunders of UNC Greensboro in 1:50.

Also competing well for the Blue Devils were redshirt freshman Riley Adamson and freshmen Ryan Harding and Brian Self.

Adamson garnered third place at 141 pounds after defeating VMI's David Yost 8-6 in the consolation title match. The native of Albuquerque, N.M., posted three falls in his run through the consolation bracket.

Both Harding and Self finished fourth overall at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Harding registered a pair of narrow decisions in the consolation bracket to earn a spot in the third-place match. Up against NC State's Colton Palmer, Harding dropped a 10-5 decision to finish fourth overall.

Self started the day with two marathon matches as he wrestled back-to-back triple overtime bouts. Going 1-1 in those matches, Self dominated in his next consolation match, pinning the opponent he lost to in the opening match to move into the third-place contest. Self came back and lost a narrow 5-2 defeat to Caylor Williams of UNC Greensboro to take fourth overall.

Duke returns to action on Nov. 21 at the Keystone Classic. Action is set to kick off at 9 a.m.
