The Blue Devils have now won the last 11 season openers and are 77-29 all-time in the first game of the season. Duke has won 29 straight home openers and are 30-1 under head coach Mike Krzyzewski in home openers.
Duke extended its NCAA-leading streak of non-conference home wins to 78 with the victory over Princeton. The Blue Devils have won 20 straight games in Cameron Indoor Stadium overall and 49 of its last 51 home contests.
In the month of November, Duke has won 23 consecutive games dating back to a loss to Marquette in the 2006 CBE Classic.
Dating back to last season, the Blue Devils have now won 11 straight games.
The sellout in the season opener extended Duke's sellout streak to 306 consecutive games since Nov. 16, 1990.
The 97 points scored are the most in an opener since 2007 when the Blue Devils tallied 121 points against N.C. Central. Duke is 256-8 under Krzyzewski when scoring 90 or more points.
The 36 made field goals are the most since Dec. 31 of last year when Duke had 36 against Pennsylvania. The 14 three-point field goals are the most since Dec. 29 of last season when they had 15 against Long Beach State. Six different players made a three-point field goal with three players hitting three treys.
Duke shot over 50 percent from behind the three-point line and from the field. They made 55.4 percent of their baskets and 53.8 percent of their three-point field goals. In the second half, Duke shot 8-of-11 (.727) from behind the three-point line and 20-of-30 (.667) overall.
The .727 three-point field goal percentage is tied for third best in a second half by a Duke team with at least 10 attempts. The other times where Duke was 8-of-11 was against Connecticut on Nov. 29, 1994 and N.C. State on Feb. 8, 1997. The two better performances were 10-of-13 (.769) against N.C. Central on Nov. 9, 2007 and 11-of-13 (.846) against Clemson on Jan. 4, 1995.
Duke made its first 11 free throw attempts and finished the game 11-of-12 (.917) from the free throw line. The Blue Devils shot 90 percent or better from the foul line four times last season.
Five different players scored in double figures for the Blue Devils.
Duke had 26 assists on 36 made field goals in the game. The 26 assists are the most since the Blue Devils had 27 assists against Gardner-Webb on Dec. 15 last season.
The Blue Devils forced 27 turnovers, which marks the first time that Duke has forced over 25 turnovers in a game since Jan. 14, 2009 when they forced 28 against Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils scored 36 points off the 27 turnovers.
Duke led by as many as 40 points with 2:36 remaining in the game and never trailed in 40 minutes.
Duke closed the first half on an 8-0 run over the final 1:44 of play to take their largest lead of the first half at 14 points, 42-28. The Blue Devils did not trail in the first half of play.
The Blue Devils recorded assists on 13 of its 16 first half made field goals.
Sophomore transfer Seth Curry made his first appearance as a Blue Devil at the 14:26 mark in the first half. Curry sat out last season per NCAA Transfer rules after coming to Duke from Liberty.
Curry scored 14 points in his Duke debut, coming off the bench. It was two fewer points than transfer Roshown McLeod had as a starter in his first game with the Blue Devils in 1996 against St. Joseph's.
Sophomore Andre Dawkins reached double figures in scoring for the seventh time in his career and first time since Dec. 31, 2009 against Pennsylvania. He did not score in double figures in his final 26 games of last season.
Dawkins made three shots from behind the three-point line, marking the fifth time in his career he has made at least three treys.
Freshman Kyrie Irving became the first Duke point guard to start the season opener as a freshman since Jason Williams in 1999. Williams started against No. 10 Stanford in an 80-79 loss and had 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, six turnovers and two steals. The last freshman point guard to start and win was Bobby Hurley who had four points, two assists and one rebound in a 130-54 win over Harvard. Irving was also the first freshman to start the opener since Miles Plumlee did two years ago.
Irving scored 17 points in his debut, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
His nine assists are a school record by a freshman in the season opener and tied for the fourth highest total by any Duke player in a season opener. The record for any player is 12 by Phil Henderson against Harvard in 1989. Bobby Hurley (10 in 1992), Tommy Amaker (10 in 1984) and Bob Bender (nine in 1979) all had the same or more but were juniors or seniors. The previous freshman record was eight by Chris Duhon against Princeton in 2000.
With a 9:1 assist-to-turnover ratio he ties the school record with +8 assists. Henderson had 12 assists and four turnovers in his game while Hurley had 10 assists and two turnovers to tie with +8. The nine assists are the most ever recorded with less than two turnovers in a season opener in Duke history.
Freshman Tyler Thornton made his Duke debut at the 8:50 mark of the second half and had two points, two assists and two steals with zero turnovers in nine minutes.
