Blue Devils to Open the Season Saturday Versus BYU... The preseason sixth-ranked Duke women's basketball team will open the 2010-11 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m., against Brigham Young. The contest will be played in historic Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke opens the season with two straight home contests before hitting the road for five out of six games. The Blue Devils are preseason ranked No. 6 in both the Associated Press and No. 5 in the ESPN/USA Today Division I Coaches Polls.

Noting Duke... The Blue Devils return three starters --
Jasmine Thomas,
Karima Christmas and
Krystal Thomas off a squad that posted a 30-6 overall record a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight ... Duke has been ranked in the Associated Press for 206 straight weeks, which dates back to the 1999-2000 season ... the Blue Devils have been listed in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll for 254 consecutive weeks - dating back to the 1997-98 campaign.
A Look At BYU... BYU enters the game on Sunday coming off advancing to the quarterfinals of the WNIT a year ago and notching a 23-10 overall record. The Cougars return four starters and nine letterwinners under Head Coach Jeff Judkins, who is in his 10th year at BYU.
In two exhibition games this year, the Cougars won 85-58 over Ft. Lewis College and downed Mesa State College, 96-41. Mindy Bonham led all scorers with 13 and 15 points, respectively, for BYU.
The Series With BYU... Duke and BYU will meet for only the second time in school history. The Blue Devils downed the Cougars, 80-60, in the only meeting back on Jan. 10, 1987 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke Head Coach

Duke Versus the Mountain West... The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 7-0 against Mountain West teams -- Brigham Young (1-0), Colorado State (1-0), San Diego State (2-0), TCU (2-0) and Utah (1-0).
Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes... • After missing the exhibition games against Wingate and Carson-Newman, freshman
Chelsea Gray is expected to see action in the season opener on Saturday against BYU. Gray was the Co-National High School Player of the Year as a senior last year.

A Look at the Exhibition Games... In the two exhibition games for the Blue Devils, Duke won 88-44 against Wingate and downed Carson-Newman, 121-65. Senior
Jasmine Thomas led all scorers with a 19.5 per game average, while dishing a team-best 11 assists.
A total of six Blue Devils averaged double-figures --
Kathleen Scheer (16.5),
Karima Christmas (14.0),
Tricia Liston (12.5),
Chloe Wells (12.0) and
Krystal Thomas (11.5). As a team, Duke hit 50.3 percent of its field goals and 34.9 percent from downtown, while averaging 104.5 points.
Against Carson-Newman, Wells was solid at point guard with 24 points and nine steals in 26 minutes. Liston hit the 20-point mark against Carson-Newman as well with 20 points, six rebounds and five steals in 18 minutes.
Scheer Expected to Make First Career Start... After turning in a solid summer and preseason, junior
Kathleen Scheer started the first two exhibition games and is expected to make her first collegiate start against BYU on Saturday. Scheer, who is a product of New Haven, Mo., averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks in two exhibition contests.
Scheer has seen limited action her first two years with the Blue Devils playing in 51 games and averaging 2.4 points and 1.3 rebounds.
Season Openers... Overall, Duke is 27-8 in season openers over its 35 years of women's basketball. When opening the season at home, the Blue Devils have notched a 19-1 overall record, while winning 18 in a row. The only loss came to UNC Greensboro on Dec. 1, 1977, 82-57.
Wells to See Game Action, Finally... After missing her senior campaign at A.B. Miller H.S., last year due to transfer rules, freshman
Chloe Wells will see her first real game-action since Feb. 26, 2009. The contest was for Apex H.S. against Broughton in the second round of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs. Apex lost to Broughton, 47-46, and Wells tallied a game-high 19 points.
Wells did play in an all-star contest this past April and notched 17 points, four rebounds and four assists to lead the Southern Section past the City, 81-53. She is coming off notching a game-high 24 points in the final exhibition contest against Carson-Newman to go along with nine steals.
At Home in Cameron Indoor Stadium... Since Head Coach
Joanne P. McCallie took over as head coach at Duke in 2007-08, she has guided the Blue Devils to a 40-4 overall record in Cameron Indoor Stadium. During that stretch, the Blue Devils posted a 14-0 mark in 2008-09, which was only the second undefeated home season in school history.
In Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke has won 40 out of the last 44 contests, 54 out of the last 58 and 135 out of the last 145 games since 2000-01.
Coach P During First Three Years... Head Coach
Joanne P. McCallie has registered 82 victories in her first three years at Duke, which is the second-highest total for Division I head coaches in their first three years at an institution. McCallie ranks behind only Leon Barmore of Louisiana Tech (90). Other coaches making the list were Tom Collen of Arkansas (80), Kurt Budke of Oklahoma State (80), Joan Bonvicini of Seattle (79) and Kristy Curry of Texas Tech (78).
Thomas a National Player of the Year Candidate... Duke senior
Jasmine Thomas has been named a candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy, John R. Wooden Award and Naismith National Player of the Year awards.
Thomas is coming off a junior campaign where she averaged 16.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.8 steals on the year, while leading Duke to its sixth ACC Championship and a share of the ACC Regular Season title. The 5-9 guard started all 36 contests and led the Blue Devils with 11 games with 20 or more points scored.
A native of Fairfax, Va., Thomas was one of 12 finalists for the State Farm Wade Trophy, Naismith and John R. Wooden candidate for National Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP, first team All-ACC, Nancy Lieberman Award nominee, Kay Yow Award as the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America a year ago.
Thomas had one of the best all-around seasons in Duke history as she became only the second Blue Devil to notch 100 steals in a season along with Alana Beard. Thomas also ranked in seven other Duke single-season categories -- 63 three-pointers (4th), 577 points (7th), 1,168 minutes (1st), 532 field goal attempts (2nd), 177 three-point field goal attempts (5th), 146 assists (8th) and 100 steals (4th).
Duke Downs Carson-Newman to Close Exhibition Action... The Duke women's basketball team had seven players score in the double figures as the Blue Devils downed Carson-Newman, 121-65, Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Duke's final exhibition game of year. Freshmen
Chloe Wells and
Tricia Liston led Duke with 24 and 20 points, respectively, while junior
Kathleen Scheer registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Blue Devils shot 57-percent from the floor for the game as seniors
Karima Christmas (11),
Krystal Thomas (10) and
Jasmine Thomas (16), along with freshman
Haley Peters (12), joined Wells, Liston and Scheer in double figures. In addition, Duke outrebounded Carson-Newman 53-19 with Scheer (10) and K. Thomas (9) leading the way on the boards.
The Blue Devils controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to a 20-0 lead in the first seven minutes. Carson-Newman traded baskets with Duke over the next four minutes before the Blue Devils closed out the half with a 30-17 run, taking a 62-29 advantage into the intermission.
Duke's offense continued to click in the second half, with the Blue Devils hitting their first eight shots of the period in an 18-3 run to open the stanza. Duke never looked back, cruising to the 56-point victory. Scheer and Liston paced the Blue Devil offense in the second half with 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Defensively, Wells led the Blue Devils with nine steals as Duke registered 26 takeaways, compared to four by the Eagles.
Coach P Approaching 400 Wins... Duke Head Coach
Joanne P. McCallie is only two wins away from notching 400 victories over her 19-year coaching career.
McCallie will become the 43rd Division I coach to reach the 400-win mark.
