TULSA, Okla. – Freshman
Chris Mengel won his fifth straight match in the ITA All-American Championships to move on to the final round of qualifying on Tuesday in Tulsa, Okla.
Mengel defeated Luis Grangeiro of Baylor University in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. He has now won two qualifying matches after winning all three of his prequalifying contests over the weekend. For a spot in the main draw, Mengel will take on Washington's Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan on Wednesday. Nedunchezhivan is ranked No. 54 in the ITA preseason singles rankings. Mengel is 2-1 against ranked opponents this season and 10-2 overall in singles.
Jared Pinsky and
Fred Saba each lost to ranked players in singles to be eliminated from contention. Pinsky fell to No. 50 Sebastian Fanselow 6-3, 6-1 while Saba suffered a 6-1, 7-6 (4) setback to No. 73 Alex Stamchev of Auburn.
Doubles qualifying began on Tuesday with two rounds being played. Mengel and Saba won their first match, 8-3, against Patrick Kawka and Thomas Shubert of BYU. The Duke pair then lost to Ohio State's Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa, 8-2.
Wednesday is the final day of qualifying. The main draw will begin on Thursday for singles and doubles with Duke's
Reid Carleton and
Henrique Cunha each making their tournament debut at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
