TULSA, Okla. – All three of Duke's singles players in the qualifying stage of the ITA/D'Novo All-American Championships were victorious on Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Freshman
Chris Mengel came up with a ranked win on Monday to advance. He was going up against No. 70 Kevin King of Georgia Tech and fell behind early as King took the first set 6-3.
Mengel had trailed after one set three other times this year and came back to win one of those matches in three sets. He would add his second come-from-behind victory today by taking the final two sets 6-3, 6-3. Next up Mengel will face Baylor's Luis Grangeiro, who won two tiebreakers to outlast his first round opponent in three sets.
Fellow freshman
Fred Saba also trailed after one set but won in three. He went up against Evan Urbina of Brigham Young University and earned a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 victory. Saba moves on to the next round where he will square off against No. 73 Alex Stamchev of Auburn.
Senior
Jared Pinsky had received an at large spot in qualifying after suffering a defeat in the final round of prequalifying yesterday. He made the most of his opportunity with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win over Conor Berg of New Mexico. Pinsky will try to keep his run going against No. 50 Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine on Tuesday.
Doubles qualifying will start on Tuesday with two rounds. Duke's Mengel and Saba will team up for the first time and are scheduled to face Patrick Kawka and Thomas Shubert of Brigham Young University in the afternoon. There are 64 doubles teams in the qualifying with eight moving on to the main draw. Tomorrow's action will begin at 8 a.m. with the second round of singles.
