WILMINGTON, N.C. - Duke University sophomore Lindy Duncan carded a six-under-par, 66, on Saturday in the second round of The Landfall Tradition to propel the Blue Devils into a five-stroke lead at the 6,325-yard, par 72 Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
Duke went from being tied for first after day one along with Texas to holding a five-stroke lead over UCLA. The Blue Devils posted a team-best four-under-par, 284, on Saturday and now holds a 36-hole total of 575, which is one-under-par. UCLA is second at 580, while North Carolina (580), Texas (593), Virginia (593), Michigan State (598), Notre Dame (600), Wake Forest (605), South Carolina (606) and Ohio State (610) rounded out the top 10.
The Blue Devils enter the final round with the lead for the first time this season and are looking for their first victory of the 2010-11 campaign. Head Coach Dan Brooks is in search of his 111th career victory.
"We had a lot of grinding out there and a lot of hard work," said Brooks on the second round. "Everybody was shining at one point. It was a fun day. There was a lot of really good spirit out there -- everybody seemed to be really focused and fighting hard and that is always fun to watch."
Duncan, who is out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., managed only one birdie on Friday, but had her putting rolling on Saturday as she drained six birdies -- three on the front and three on the back -- on her way to notching a 66 for the second time this season. The six-under-par ledger matches a career-best 18-hole score for the reigning ACC Player of the Year. Duncan hit 15 greens, hit all 14 fairways and totaled a season-best 26 putts.
"What got her yesterday was she didn't hit it really well so it was hard for her to have the best frame of mind on the putts because she wasn't getting on a lot of greens," commented Brooks. "So there was probably a little bit of pressure put on her putting. Today she was hitting a lot more greens and she was able to relax. When she is hitting a lot of greens, her mind gets just right for making a lot of putts."
Holding the individual lead is Virginia's Brittany Altomare with a 36-hole total of 139. Duncan is second with a 140 with rounds of 74 and 66.
Freshman Alejandra Cangrejo enters the final round tied for sixth with a 144, after 18-hole totals of 71 and 73 for a total of 144. Cangrejo, who is from Bogota, Colombia, suffered four bogeys on the front nine to go along with two birdies and three pars as she made the turn with a two-over-par, 38. She played the final nine holes at one-under-par as she notched back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and No. 17.
Seeing in her first team action of the 2010 fall, sophomore Stacey Kim turned in an even-par, 72, and is tied for 15th with a 148. A product of Columbus, Ga., Kim had a hot start with birdies on No. 3, No. 7 and No. 9 on her way to make the turn at three-under-par, 33. She suffered a bogey on the 13th and a double-bogey on No. 16 as she closed the day at even par. Kim hit 14 greens, 13 fairways and had 29 putts on the day.
Sophomore Courtney Ellenbogen also had a solid start to her round as she collected back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes to move to two-under-par. She then suffered two straight bogeys to go back to even par, but the native of Blacksburg, Va., battled all day with seven up-and-downs. Ellenbogen posted eight pars and one bogey on the back nine to finish with a 73. She hit 10 fairways, eight greens, but rolled a season-best 25 putts.
The Blue Devils totaled 16 birdies in the second round.
"Just exactly what they have been doing," said Brooks on what the team needs to do on Sunday to bring home a win. "They were fantastic today and they just need to repeat the same effort and attitudes."
Duke will tee off on Sunday in the final round at 8:45 a.m., in a shotgun start along with North Carolina and UCLA.
