DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's basketball team was one of eight schools announced for the 2011 EA Sports Maui Invitational field on Thursday.
Duke will be playing in the tournament for the fifth time, winning the title in all four of its previous visits to the island. The Blue Devils captured tournament wins in 1992, 1997, 2001 and most recently in 2007.
Starting in 2011 the field will be expanded from eight to 12 teams. The total number of tournament games will also expand from 12 games currently played on the island of Maui to a total of 23 games, which include 11 games played on the U.S. mainland.
Seven games between seven Maui-bound teams and four mainland teams will be played at the Maui-bound teams' home arenas from Friday, Nov. 11 through Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011. Over the next couple of days four games will be played between four mainland teams at a mainland team's home arena from Saturday, Nov. 19 to Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011. The current eight-team, three-day bracket event
will continue as usual in Maui from Monday, Nov. 21 to Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011.
Joining Duke in Maui in 2011 will be Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee, UCLA and the host school Chaminade. The other four mainland schools will be announced at a later date.
All 12 tournament games in Maui will be televised by the ESPN family of networks. For the second consecutive year, every game will be produced in high definition on ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD and ESPNU HD, with the ESPN and ESPN2 games also streaming live on ESPN3.com.
