DURHAM, N.C. - The ITA Carolina Regional will begin Thursday with two rounds of doubles. Matches will take place in Durham and Chapel Hill from Thursday through Monday.
The Duke men's tennis team will have four doubles teams competing and seven individuals in action to try and earn a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7 in Flushing, N.Y.
The No. 1 doubles team in the country, Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha, will lead the way as the defending Carolina Regional doubles champions. The duo is coming off a semifinals appearance at the ITA All-American Championships and have a record of 6-1 on the season.
Also competing in doubles is Chris Mengel and David Holland who reached the finals of the Duke Fab Four Invite earlier this fall. Competing together for the first time will be freshman Cale Hammond and senior Alain Michel.
Cunha is the top singles player in the tournament with a preseason ranking of No. 2 in the country. He is 6-1 on the year with his only loss coming in the round of 16 at the All-American Championships to the eventual tournament champion Alex Domijian of Virginia. Already with 10 singles victories this year, Mengel will try to build on his strong start to his collegiate career with a good showing in the regionals. Earlier this fall Mengel won the Duke Fab Four Invite title and advanced through prequalifying and into the final round of qualifying at the All-American Championships.
Saba had his most impressive showing of the fall in Tulsa last week with three prequalifying wins and one qualifying victory to improve to 7-5. Pinsky has won at least two matches in all three tournaments this fall on his way to a 7-5 mark also.
Michel will be making his fall debut. The senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil has a 35-29 career singles record. Holland and Hammond are off to slow starts this season. Holland has a 1-3 singles record but had a good regionals last year with two wins to reach the round of 32. Hammond has been slowed by injuries from the summer and early fall and is just 1-6 overall.
Carleton will not be competing in singles as he earned an automatic spot in nationals by reaching the semifinals of the All-American Championships last weekend.
