DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshmen Josh Hairston, Kyrie Irving and Tyler Thornton are the newest members of the Duke men's basketball team, and each one sat down with GoDuke.com in anticipation of the 2010-11 season and Countdown to Craziness, which is set to tip-off this Friday from Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Hairston, a native of Fredericksburg, Va., played his senior season at Montrose Christian High School. The 6'7" forward started all five games for the USA at the 2010 FIBA U18 Championship in San Antonio, Texas averaging 5.2 points and 2.5 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game to help the USA to a 5-0 record and the gold medal. He was also named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland after averaging 20.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game as a senior.
Irving, a native of West Orange, N.J., was a two-year letterwinner at St. Patrick's High School. The 6'2" guard averaged 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game as a senior lead the Celtics to a 24-3 record overall and the No. 7 ranking in the final USA Today Poll. He was also a member of the 2010 FIBA U18 Championship team, averaged 13.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game, while shooting over 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line for the tournament.
Thornton, a native of Washington, D.C., was a four-year letterwinner at Gonzaga High School and two time team MVP. The 6'1" guard averaged 14.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.1 steals per game and shot over 80 percent from the foul line as a senior. He was also honored as the Washington D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year in 2010 and named the House of Hoops Male Basketball Athlete of the Year for the Washington Metropolitan area.
