DURHAM, N.C. - When the Duke Swimming and Diving team opens its 2009-10 season on October 17 against UNC Wilmington, it will be in the newly renovated Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
Facility improvements began at the end of last year's spring semester and were completed this past week in time for the start of the school year. The upgrades, which include a new pool deck, lanes lines, gutter system, and starting blocks, represent a 1.5 million dollar investment in the future success of the program.
The Blue Devils returned to practice Monday hoping to build off last year in which the men posted a 6-3 (2-3 ACC) record and the women registered a 7-4 (3-3 ACC) mark. Nick Garvy, Nathan French, and Spencer Booth headline a talented men's team which rewrote the school records in 18 of a total 22 events last season. The story is much the same on women's side which returns Steffi Niessl, Shannon Beall, Ashley Twichell, and Meredith Bannon who combined to break 8-of-14 Duke records in individual events a year ago.
While sophomore diving standout Abby Johnston looks to improve on a stellar freshman campaign which culminated in a fifth place finish at the 2009 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the men's diving program has added both talent and depth with the arrival of highly touted freshman Nick McCroy.
The 2009-10 Blue Devils will be lead by senior captains Tim McKeever, Paul Zarian, Meredith Bannon, and Shannon Beall.
