DURHAM, N.C. - Former Blue Devil Michael Yani won two qualifying matches to advance to the main draw of the 2009 U.S. Open played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City.
Yani, ranked No. 248 in the ATP rankings, opened qualifying with an upset win in straight sets over the No. 29 seed and 127th-ranked Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France, 6-1, 6-3. Yani moved on to face No. 296 Raven Klaasen of South Africa and fell behind early, losing the first 6-1. He bounced back to win a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6) to force a third and deciding set. The momentum carried on for Yani as he cruised to a 6-2 win and a spot in the main draw for the first time in his career.
In the first round of the U.S. Open main draw, Yani will face Sam Querrey, the No. 22 seed and No. 23-ranked player in the ATP rankings. Querrey is a fellow American and has won two career titles.
In late June, Yani competed in his first career grand slam event when he qualified for the main draw of Wimbledon. He lost in three sets to No. 102 Simon Greul of Germany 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.
The main draw matches of the U.S. Open will begin on Monday, August 31.
