KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After only one week of practice, the 16th-ranked Duke women's soccer team traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday for an exhibition contest and came away with a 5-2 victory at the Regal Soccer Stadium.
The Blue Devils and Lady Vols were deadlocked at 2-2 at the half before Duke registered three unanswered goals to post the 5-2 win. Four different Blue Devils tallied goals in the win.
"It was a very good start," commented Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "I was very impressed with how the girls approached the game and I thought we had a very good week of training in Asheville. We have gotten a little bit better each day after starting practice."
Duke wasted little time breaking into the scoring column, finding paydirt in the fourth minute of play. Senior forward KayAnne Gummersall dribbled up the right side and crossed into the 18-yard box to forward Rebecca Allen. She settled the ball and fired a low shot to the left of Tennessee junior goalkeeper Molly Baird to make it 1-0.
"We had a lot of energy when we came out today and getting the early goal is always good," said Church. "We finished really well in the game, which is something we haven't been doing well in training. It all came together today. I thought it was a solid start."
The Lady Vols got their offense going in the ninth-minute as Hannah Hut worked up the left wing and delivered a perfect arc to senior Mick Imgram. Imgram settled the sphere at her feet in the center of the 18-yard box, turned and unleashed a bending shot past Duke's diving goalkeeper Emily Nahas and into the right side of the net.
After a long stretch of midfield action, Duke midfielder Elisabeth Redmond managed to get just clear of a defender on a mini-break and at the edge of the 18-yard box, fired a low drive into the goal for a 2-1, Blue Devil advantage. Redmond, who is a native of Morristown, N.J., is a candidate for the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2009.
With time winding down in the opening stanza, UT's Alexis Owens finished off a cross from fellow rookie forward Jayden Barrett to tie the match at 2-2. Barrett fought off a defender and unleashed her assist from just short of traveling over the end line.
Duke managed to outshoot the Lady Vols by a 6-2 margin in the first half.
Fresh out of the locker room, Duke quickly grabbed back the momentum as Redmond tallied her second goal of the match at the 46:43 mark off a cross from Gummersall.
Tennessee's offense pressured new Blue Devil keeper Tara Campbell over the next few minutes as shots by Hall and Owens forced saves by the keeper.
Duke's Carey Goodman attempted a cross in the 72nd-minute for the Blue Devils that traveled over a leaping Baird before rattling off the far post. On the rebound, midfielder Kendall Bradley cleaned up with a blast from 10 yards out that eluded UT's keeper for a 4-2 lead.
"We have been preaching a team concept since day one," said Church. "I think for us to be at our top is we are going to have to play as a team and that is what we did. It was nice to see a lot of different players finish well. From where we are, I thought it was a great performance."
From there Goodman added a score at 86:07 on an assist from Cody Newman as her pass got Goodman ahead of the defense. From there she buried it in the upper part of the twine.
A total of 18 Blue Devils saw action on the afternoon with Redmond leading Duke with four shots. Freshman Callie Simpkins and Goodman each added two shots. In goal, Nahas played the first half allowing two goals in 45 minutes. Campbell played the final 45 minutes without allowing a goal and collecting four saves.
"Tara did well when she was in there," commented Church. "She was solid and her kicking game was a real factor -- her ability to strike the ball off the punt or off the ground. Everyone who saw action played well. That is what was exciting as everyone had a lot of energy."
Tennessee concluded the match with a 13-12 shot advantage.
Duke will feature less than a week of practice before opening the 2009 campaign on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 6:00 p.m., against Gardner-Webb. To purchase season tickets for the 2009 campaign, head to www.GoDuke.com or call either 1-877-375-3853 or 919-681-2583.
