DURHAM, N.C.?The 13th-ranked Duke University men's lacrosse team returns to action this weekend with a pair of home contests against No. 14 Loyola and Yale. Duke faces off against Loyola on March 7 at 2:30 p.m., and Yale the following afternoon at 1 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.
Admission to the games is $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors. Fans unable to make it Koskinen Stadium can sign up to watch the Loyola game on ACC Select. Live statistics also will be available for both games. Links are available on www.GoDuke.com.
Duke lacrosse is providing tickets to the residents of the local Ronald McDonald House and will be accepting donations at the gate during the double header.
Duke and Loyola are battling for the 21st time since the first meeting in 1946. The Blue Devils lead the series 11-9, including getting a pair of victories in 2008. Duke defeated the Greyhounds 18-4 and 12-7 in Durham last year, with the latter victory coming in the NCAA Tournament first round. Loyola last beat the Blue Devils 8-7 on March 10, 2007 in San Diego, Calif. Duke is 8-2 at home against the Greyhounds. The last time the Blue Devils lost to Loyola in Durham was March 10, 2001 by a 10-8 score.
Duke and Yale face off for 15th time overall and for the first time since 2001. Yale narrowly leads the series 7-6-1, last winning a 12-9 contest on March 12, 1985. The Blue Devils own the previous two wins, including the most recent 10-8 victory on April 8, 2001 in Durham. The two teams have not met outside of North Carolina since 1956 when the Bulldogs triumphed 12-2 in New Haven. The past nine games have been played in either Durham or Chapel Hill, N.C.
Duke improved to 3-2 overall this week with a 16-7 victory over Holy Cross. Senior Ned Crotty leads all scorers with eight goals and a league-best 15 assists for 23 points. Junior Max Quinzani paces the squad in goals with 13 tallies and 14 points overall. C.J. Costabile leads all rookies with a goal and two assists, while sophomore Justin Turri leads first-year members with five points. Anchoring faceoff duties for the Blue Devils is senior Sam Payton. He sports a 47-of-77 record and .610 win percentage at the X after winning 17-of-20 on Tuesday versus the Crusaders. Payton also leads the team with 32 ground balls. Defensively, junior Parker McKee leads all long poles with 26 pickups. Rob Schroeder stands between the pipes and sports an 8.48 goals against average and .447 save percentage in five games. The Blue Devils are 3-1 at home this season.
Loyola comes into the game with a 3-1 record and No. 14 national ranking. The Greyhounds defeated Towson (11-8), Penn State (8-7) and Siena (7-5), but fell to Notre Dame 10-9 in the season opener. Collin Finnerty paces the offense with 12 points from nine goals and three assists, while Cooper MacDonnell has nine points on seven goals and two helpers. The Greyhounds have 12 players with at least two points on the season. John Schiavone handles the faceoff duties and is 45-of-76 for a .592 win percentage on the season. P.T. Ricci leads all players with 26 ground balls. In goal, Jake Hagelin sports a 7.50 goals against average and .605 save percentage. He has allowed double digit goals just once this season. Loyola is 2-1 away from home this season.
Yale comes to Durham after earning an 11-10 overtime win over Providence on March 5. The Bulldogs are 2-1 overall with wins over Providence and Holy Cross (13-8) and a loss to UMass (18-6). Michael Karwoski and Brendan Gibson lead the offense with nine points apiece, while Matt Gibson and Matt Fuchs both have six. Kevin Discepelo sports a 44-of-69 record at the X and has a team-high 22 ground balls. Andrew Brown has played the majority of minutes and has a 13.84 goals against average and a .372 save percentage. Johnathan Falcone has seen 67 minutes between the pipes and is 2-0 with an 8.07 goals against average and .640 save percentage.
Duke returns to action on March 14 at ACC rival North Carolina. The game will be televised by ESPNU.
