DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke University senior Abby Waner has been chosen to receive the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship Award, which was released on the WBCA on Thursday afternoon.
The Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship Award is presented annually to one female collegiate basketball player who intends to pursue graduate work and a career in sports communications/journalism. As part of the scholarship, $500 is provided by Robin Roberts for travel to/from the WBCA National Convention for the recipient, while $4,000 goes directly to the institution for the student's tuition.
“Abby has decided to pursue a career in the sports communications/journalism field and we would like to thank her for that and award her with the Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship,” WBCA CEO Beth Bass said. “We look forward to working with you in the future.”
Waner's performance on the court during her four years has been stellar as she has twice been named captain for the nationally-ranked Blue Devils. Waner is a two-time All-ACC selection, three-time candidate for The State Farm Wade Trophy (including this season), two-time Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America and two-time All-ACC Tournament first team honoree. A Highlands Ranch, Colo., product, Waner is also a finalist for the 2009 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
This season Waner is averaging 9.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.9 steals for the 24-4 Blue Devils. Waner became the first Blue Devil to notch 40 or more three-pointers made in all four seasons and on Feb. 13 versus Clemson she became Duke's all-time leader for three-pointers made. She now owns 211 for her career.
In addition to her play on the court, Waner has worked as a sideline reporter for ESPN numerous times and has worked in the same capacity for the Duke men's basketball and football teams on several occasions. In addition to her summer internship with ESPN, Waner is also a very skilled writer and has written many blogs for GoDuke.com, Associated Press and recently had an article published in the Raleigh News & Observer on the passing of Kay Yow.
Waner's willingness to go beyond the scope of academics and athletics is apparent in her commitment to community service. She has been involved in Duke's Read with the Blue Devils, Ronald McDonald House and Durham Soup Kitchen visits. She has also volunteered at the Bone Marrow Transplant Center and helped at Camp Kaleidoscope, which is part of the summer camp program for Duke Children's Hospital.
Waner will receive the award on Tuesday, April 7, during the WBCA Awards Luncheon presented by State Farm and Jostens at Noon (CT) at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis Riverfront Grand Ballroom. The luncheon is a part of the 2009 WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA? Women's Final Four? in St. Louis, Mo.
