ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - The Long Island Fury of the East Conference of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) are pleased to announce that original team members Lorraine Quinn & team captain Kelly Henderson are returning to the squad for the Summer 2009 season. This will be the fourth season for the dynamic duo - who were a large part of the team's 2006 WPSL National Championship - and also helped the Fury win the 2008 East-Mid Atlantic Division title.
Quinn scored four goals and had two assists for the Fury in 2006 on the way to being selected to the All-WPSL Tournament Team, which she describes as her best moment ever on a soccer field. Her piercing dribbles have become a trademark of the Fury offense since the team's inception. The Fury had to share Quinn with the United States Under-23 Women's National Team during the summer of 2008, and helped lead the team to the Nordic Cup championship.
"Lorraine is an unbelievable player with great technique and brilliant skills," said Long Island Fury Head Coach Paul Riley about Quinn, who last played for the U.S. U-23's in La Manga, Spain at the beginning of this month. "She is a special player with a zest for taking players on and loves the one-on-one duels. One of the best players ever to come out of Long Island."
At Duke University, the awards continued for Quinn throughout her four-year career, as she made the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman Team (starting all 18 games as a freshman) and was selected 2008 All-ACC Second Team while being honored as a member of the Hermann Trophy Watch List. Over her career in Blue Devil colors, Lorraine played in 91 matches, posting 13 goals, 19 assists (45 points) and academically, she made the Dean's List in the spring of 2008 and was selected to the All-ACC Honor Roll in both 2007 and 2008.
September 23rd of last fall was a good week for her as she was honored as Soccer America Women's Player of the Week and the ACC Player of the Week for her three goals in a 3-0 victory over Georgia. The 22-year-old Farmingdale, NY resident spent her youth soccer career playing for HBC Fury, where she won six State Cup titles and three Regional championships on a squad that was ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Quinn is the only five-year varsity starter that Farmingdale High School ever had and finished her high school career with school records in goals (38) and assists (65). Other awards include 2002 Gatorade New York State Player of the Year, two-time Parade All-American, two-time NSCAA All-America and a EA Sports High School All-American. Quinn was also four-time All-State, four-time All-County and four-time high school MVP.
At the age of 17, Henderson scored two goals and set up teammates as the 2006 Final Four MVP, as her rock solid play led the Fury to the WPSL National Championship. Not surprisingly, she mirrors her Long Island teammate in Quinn as she describes that as her best moment ever on a soccer field.
Now playing at Boston College, Henderson was selected to the 2008 Soccer Buzz All-Northeast Regional First Team and NEWISA (New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association) Second Team. In 2006, she was voted to the NEWISA Second Team, Soccer Buzz Northeast Regional All-Freshmen Team and was a fourth team Soccer Buzz All-American selection.
"Kelly has been one of the backbones of this young franchise and at the young age of 20 has taken a major leadership role," said Riley. "She is very dedicated and she embraces everything expected of a Fury player. Kelly has an unbelievable engine and is a physical specimen with a great mindset for the game.
"She is tactically way ahead of her years and is a superb all-around player. She can mark, defend, attack, take on players, is great in the air and a brilliant leader both on and off the field."
Henderson was named All-American, All-State, All-Long Island and All-County as a senior at Baldwin High School. She was a member of the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program team for five years and has worn the red, white and blue of the U.S. Under-20 National Team. Academically, Kelly was not too shabby either as she graduated in the top five percent of her class at Baldwin High School, was a National Honor Society and Foreign Language Society member plus played violin in the Chamber Orchestra.
The Long Island Fury have been selected to host the 2009 WPSL Final Four. The National Championship will be held at Adelphi University and the tentative dates are scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, August 1-2. Check back to this website in the coming days & weeks for further information.
