PUERTO PENASCO, SONORA, Mexico ? Duke University senior Jennie Lee registered a team-best one-over-par, 73, to lead the Blue Devils on day one of the Wildcat Invitational, which is being played at the 6,146-yard, par 72 Peninsula Golf Club in Puerto Penasco in the state of Sonora, Mexico.
Lee, who is from Henderson, Nev., is tied for ninth, individually, after shooting 38 on the front nine and 35 on the back during day one. Leading the individual action is Juliana Murcia of Arizona State with a five-under-par, 67, while Pia Halbig of California and Stephanie Kono of UCLA are each tied with a 69.
In the team standings, UCLA opened with a one-under-par, 287, to lead all squads, while Arizona State (295), Denver (296), Oklahoma State (299), Tulane (299), Duke (302), Southern California (302), Tennessee (302), Pepperdine (305) and California (307) rounded out the top 10.
"The course requires some local knowledge and we have learned a lot from our practice round and the first day of competition," said Duke Assistant Coach Jan Dowling. "We will make the necessary adjustments and look to make a run over the next two rounds. There is a lot of golf to play and although we didn't get off to the start we wanted, there are many positives about today that we will take into the rest of the tournament."
Junior Yu Young Lee registered a 74 on day one and is tied for 15th overall. Lee, who is from Orlando, Fla., posted her second-best 18-hole ledger in school history. Her previous high low was 71 earlier this season at Stanford. Lee notched a 35 in the first nine holes and then 39 to close out the day.
Senior Amanda Blumenherst is tied for 28th with a 76, while sophomore Kim Donovan and junior Alison Whitaker are tied for 55th with a 79.
"When our putts start to drop, we are going to go low because overall, our team is hitting the ball very solid right now," said Dowling.
Duke will tee off on Monday beginning at 8:45 a.m., along with Tulane and Oklahoma State.
