DURHAM, N.C. ? Jim Spanarkel was selected as a 2009 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament Legend in an announcement by ACC Commissioner John Swofford on Tuesday.
Spanarkel helped lead Duke to the national championship game in 1978, the school's first NCAA Final Four appearance in over 10 years. He was a two-time All-America pick in 1978 and 1979. He is one of only nine players in school history to score over 2,000 career points. He ranks ninth on the school's all-time scoring list with 2,012 points. Spanarkel also ranks fourth at Duke with 253 career steals. His 2.22 career steals per game are a school record. He also holds the school record with 93 steals in 1978, an average of 2.74 per game.
Spanarkel is one of three legends who earned the Everett Case Award as the ACC Tournament MVP, joining North Carolina's Charlie Scott (1968-70) and Georgia Tech's Brian Oliver (1987-90). Also named 2009 tournament legends are N.C. State's Monte Towe (1973-75), Florida State's Ron King (1971-73), former Miami head coach Bill Foster (1986-90), Wake Forest's Frank Johnson (1977-81), Boston College's Danya Abrams (1994-97), Clemson's Randy Mahaffey (1964-67), Maryland's Al Bunge (1958-60), Virginia's Richard Morgan (1986-89) and Virginia Tech's John Wetzel.
The Legends will be honored at the 57th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Tournament this March 12-15 in Atlanta, Ga. They will be presented to the ACC Tournament crowd at the Georgia Dome at halftime of the first semifinal game on March 14, which will have a 1:30 pm tipoff.
