CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.?The Duke University wrestling team opened up its final ACC weekend with a 35-8 loss at Virginia this afternoon in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Devils travel to take on No. 14 Virginia Tech at 7 p.m., in Blacksburg, Va.
Duke falls to 9-4 overall on the season and 1-3 against ACC foes. Virginia captured its second straight conference victory and improves to 11-10 overall. The Cavaliers won eight of 10 matches with junior John Barone and freshman Peter Terrezza earning victories.
The match started at 174 pounds with Voris Tejada going up against ninth-ranked Chris Henrich. Tejada battled hard throughout the seven minutes, losing a narrow 3-0 decision. The loss was the first ACC setback for Tejada this season.
Next on the mat was John Barone at 184 pounds. Looking for his 32nd dual match victory of the season, he dominated Joe DeGaravilla 16-1 for a technical fall. The win is the 103rd of his career, pushing him one step closer to breaking the career wins record of 105.
Wrestling for the first time since the Southern Scuffle at the end of December, Wade Van Sickle went up against 19th-ranked Brent Jones. Jones added six points to the team total, pinning Van Sickle in 6:19.
Robert Holbrook lined up at heavyweight and dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Calvin Cardillo to push the Cavaliers' lead to 12-5. Rookie Peter Terrezza got Duke back on the winning track with a 10-3 decision over Wyatt Anderson at 125 pounds. Terrezza pushes his record to 21-17 overall and 7-6 in duals.
Virginia captured the remaining five matches, starting with a pin at 133 pounds. Jack Anderson fell to Matt Bonson in a fall in 54 seconds. The Cavaliers' added five more points to the total with a technical fall, 20-5, by No. 18 Nick Nelson over Duke's Nick Adamo.
Stepping in at 149 pounds was A.J. Guardado. Looking for his third dual match win of the year, Guardado dropped a 13-2 major decision against Peter Ferrara. The match closed out with Mike Bell and Addison Nuding losing at 157 pounds and 165 pounds.
Competing up a weight class, Bell lost 24-9 in a technical fall, while Nuding dropped a narrow 4-2 decision to Mike Sewell in overtime. The loss was the just the third for Nuding this year.
Duke closes out its regular season schedule on Feb. 21, hosting Campbell at 7 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
