DURHAM, N.C. ? Patrick Bailey and Ben Patrick -- teammates at Duke for two seasons in 2004-05 -- have helped their respective NFL employers onto the grand stage of professional football: Super Bowl XLIII which will take place on Sunday, February 1 at 6 p.m., in Tampa, Fla.
Bailey, a rookie outside linebacker who plays primarily on special teams, and the Pittsburgh Steelers advanced to the title game with a 23-14 AFC championship victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Patrick, a second-year tight end, caught a two-point conversion pass in the fourth quarter to help the Arizona Cardinals to a 32-25 triumph over the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title contest.
Bailey lettered four seasons at Duke from 2004-07. In 36 career games as a Blue Devil, the Elmendorf, Texas, native posted 191 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. Bailey, who was named the Steelers' Rookie of the Year, made an immediate impact on special teams by securing 15 tackles in 11 regular season games this year. Pittsburgh captured the AFC North Division championship with a 12-4 record and earned a first round bye in the playoffs.
Patrick lettered three seasons with the Blue Devils from 2003-05 and finished with 79 career receptions for 781 yards and two touchdowns. In 2008, Patrick caught 11 passes for 104 yards during the regular season as the Cardinals went 9-7 and won the NFC West Division crown.
