DURHAM, N.C. - Former Duke University standout Allison Lipsher has been invited to train with the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., from Dec. 13-20. Players from the Women's Professional Soccer clubs as well as collegiate players were selected to train. Of the 24 players in camp, 11 are from WPS teams and 13 are from the college programs.
The beginning of the U.S. U-23 training camp will overlap three days with the end of the full Women's National Team training camp at The HDC, giving U.S. Head Coach Pia Sundhage and her staff the chance to evaluate the younger players in a competitive environment. The U.S. U-23s will also get the chance to compete with and against the full WNT players.
A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Lipsher played last season with the Boston Breakers of the WPS. For the season, she started 10-of-11 matches, allowed only six goals in 11 matches and posted a 0.58 goals-against average. Lipsher, who is a 2008 Duke graduate, also notched five shutouts, which ranked fourth-best in the league.
"I am really excited," said Lipsher. "To get the opportunity to train at that level with all of those great players is very exciting. A training environment of that caliber of such a high level is hard to come by. It is amazing that the national team will be there training as well. A couple of my teammates from Boston will be there so it will be good to see them."
The invite for Lipsher marks the second time she has trained with a U.S. National Team as in 2006 she worked out with the U.S. Under-20 National Team following her sophomore year.
"This will be a great training camp for both the players and coaches," said Head Coach Bill Irwin. "The WPS players will get the chance to get in some excellent training in a team environment, the college players will get the chance to test themselves against players who have one year of experience in the pro league and the coaches for both the U-23s and the full National Team will get to see how the players measure up to full national team players who have won a lot of games internationally for our country."
