DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team will kick off the 2009-10 season this weekend in a pair of events. A selection of Blue Devils will travel to the Citadel Open on Nov. 7 with the remaining members making the trip to the Hokie Open.
Competition opens at The Citadel at 9 a.m., on Nov. 7 at McAlister Field House, while the Hokie Open will take place at the Salem Civic Center the following day in Salem, Va.
Eight individuals will represent Duke at The Citadel Open, while four others will compete unattached at the event on the weekend. Sophomore Chris Mullen and seniors Chris Thumen and Spencer Jasper all will compete at 141 pounds. Freshmen Dak Adamson and Brent Jorge are set to line up at 149 pounds.
Wrestling at 184 pounds for Duke will be redshirt freshman Diego Bencomo. He captured top honors at The Citadel Open a year ago, wrestling unattached. Rounding out the Blue Devil contingency are freshmen Robert Mello at 197 pounds and Andrew Fulk at heavyweight.
Sophomore Nick Adamo and freshmen David Henry, Bret Klopp and Riley Adamson all will wrestle unattached.
Eight Blue Devils are scheduled to compete at the Hokie Open. Sophomore Peter Terrezza starts the lineup at 125 pounds, while junior Mike Bell will move down a group from last year to 141 pounds. Sophomore Dan Adamo makes the move up one class to 157 pounds and junior Willy Mello will represent Duke in the 165-pound division.
Looking to continue his strong career, senior Voris Tejada will anchor Duke at 174 pounds. Returning to his weight class of 197 pounds after wrestling up to heavyweight much of last season will be Robert Holbrook. Senior Konrad Dudziak will look to defend his title from last year at heavyweight.
Duke next will travel to the Pembroke Open on Nov. 14. The Blue Devils kick off the dual match season against Davidson on Dec. 2.
