WINSTON-SALME, N.C.-Duke University junior Reka Zsilinszka continued her run through the women's tennis singles bracket today with a pair of victories to advance to the championship match in the ITA Carolina Regional Championship hosted by Wake Forest University. Zsilinszka will play in the title contest on Oct. 26 with the winner earning an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championship.
Opening the day against 12th-ranked Sanaz Marand of North Carolina, Zsilinszka captured the opening set 7-5 before Marand battled back to even the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set. Zsilinszka, ranked 13th nationally, rallied back to take home the 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 quarterfinal win.
In the semifinal, the native of Fayetteville, N.C., cruised past No. 29 Ana Zubori of South Carolina 6-3, 6-4 to take a spot in the final. Zsilinszka will take on No. 9 Josipa Bek of Clemson at 11:30 a.m., on Oct. 26 for the automatic berth in the National Indoor Championship.
The Blue Devils also had both doubles tandems in the semifinal round. The duo of Amanda Granson and Ellah Nze battled No. 5 Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand point-for-point, but came up just short in a 9-8 loss.
Duke's Elizabeth Plotkin and Zsilinszka were equally impressive against Clemson's No. 14-ranked Bek and Ina Hadziselimovic. Matching the Tigers shot-for-shot as well, the Blue Devils lost in a tiebreaker 9-8. This weekend's tournament marked the first time those doubles tandems had played together all season.
"Our doubles was much improved," head coach Jamie Ashworth. "Even though we lost both matches they both had chances to win. It was a good weekend for us overall."
