DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University women's tennis team is back in action this weekend at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Carolina Championship hosted by Wake Forest University. The Blue Devils have four players seeded among the top 16 singles, including two in the top six. Both doubles pair also earned top five seeds. Duke begins play on Friday, Oct. 23.
Juniors Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka are Duke's highest seeded players, earning the No. 3 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Seniors Amanda Granson and Elizabeth Plotkin also were awarded top 16 seeds. Sophomore Monica Gorny also was selected to the main draw for the Blue Devils.
In doubles action, Granson and Nze will pair up as the No. 4 seed, while Plotkin and Zsilinszka will play as the fifth seed. Playing together for the first time this season, both tandems received byes in the first round.
Ranked 19th nationally, Nze is 3-2 overall this season and will take on Jessica Cook of East Carolina in her opening match of the weekend. Thirteenth-ranked Zsilinszka (2-4) is scheduled to go up against a qualifier and No. 57 Granson will test her 5-2 mark against Davidson's Stephanie Synn. Rounding out the Duke lineup is Plotkin (3-2) taking on NC State's Tana Illova and Gorny (5-2) lining up across from top-16 seed Sophie Grabinski of North Carolina.
