Duke Notes:
No. 5-ranked Duke defeated Virginia Tech 69-44 on Sunday, January 4, 2009, at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. to open up conference play. The Blue Devils improve to 12-1 on the season.
A Winning Tradition
? Duke has now won 1,861 games all-time, the fourth-highest victory total in NCAA history.
? The Blue Devils have won 273 games this decade, the most wins in a decade by the program. The win total is tied for the fifth-most in any decade by a team in NCAA history with UCLA from 1970-79.
? Duke has won 97 regular season conference games this decade, more than any other school in league history. The Blue Devils have won at least 10 ACC games in seven of the first eight seasons this decade.

Krzyzewski Climbs Victory Ladder
? Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his 815th victory as a head coach on Wednesday. He ranks fifth all-time in NCAA Division I history for career victories and is first among active coaches.
? Krzyzewski is now 15 victories shy of Jim Phelan for fourth all-time.
? Coach K now has 742 wins as the head coach at Duke, ranking him sixth in NCAA Division I history for victories at one school and second among active coaches (Jim Boeheim, Syracuse ? 784). Krzyzewski is 17 wins shy of Western Kentucky's Ed Diddle for fifth all-time.
? Krzyzewski's 815 victories are the second most by a head coach through 34 years of coaching. Only Dean Smith of North Carolina won more games with 830 victories.
Offensive Notes
? Despite scoring a season-low 69 points, the Blue Devils won by 25 points, the eighth time they have won by 20 or more points this season.
? The Blue Devils have led from start to finish in each of the last three games. The last time Duke trailed in a game was at the 15:19 mark in the first half (10-11) against UNC Asheville on Dec. 17, 2008.
? Duke opened the game on an 11-0 run, the biggest run to start a game this season by the Blue Devils. The previous best was an 8-0 start on Wednesday against Loyola.

Defensive Notes
? Duke held Virginia Tech to a season-low 44 points. The previous low was 62 against Mt. St. Marys and Xavier. Virginia Tech averaged 71.3 points per game entering Sunday's contest. The 44 points is tied for the 10th fewest allowed by Duke in an ACC game in school history. It is the fewest allowed since the Blue Devils held Wake Forest to 40 points at home on Jan. 18, 2007. The 44 points are tied for the third fewest allowed under Coach K in an ACC game. His teams also held Maryland to 40 points in a loss at home on Jan. 9, 1982 and 44 to Clemson in a win on Jan. 23, 1982.
? The Blue Devils have now held nine opponents to 60 or fewer points this season, including two under 50 points.
? Duke held the Hokies to 13 points in the second half, the fewest allowed by the Blue Devils this season. The previous low was 21 points by UNC Asheville on Dec. 17, 2008. The 13 points are tied for the third fewest allowed in a half of an ACC game in school history. Duke allowed 0 points in the first half against North Carolina (W, 47-40) on Feb. 24, 1979, eight in the second half against Wake Forest (W, 50-41) on Feb. 22, 1968 and 13 in the first half to Clemson (W, 50-44) on Jan. 23, 1982. The 13 points in the second half is tied for the 28th fewest allowed in school history for all games. It is the fewest points total allowed since they gave up just 10 points against N.C. State in the 1968 ACC Tournament.
? Virginia Tech shot 36.7 percent (18-of-49), marking the eighth time this season Duke has held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting. The 18 field goals give them five games where they have given up less than 20 made field goals.
? The Hokies made just 1-of-9 three-point field goal attempts. The one trey was the fewest allowed in a game by Duke this season. They gave up just two three-pointers to Purdue on Dec. 2, 2008. It is the fifth time this season the Blue Devils have given up three treys or less. It was the 123rd time in school history the Blue Devils held its opponent under 20 percent from deep. Duke has a 111-12 (.902) record in those contests.

Gerald Henderson
? Junior Gerald Henderson scored 15 points on 5-of-10 from the field, 1-of-2 from the three-point line and 4-of-5 from the foul line. He has scored in double figures in five straight games and in nine contests this season. He has 41 career games with 10 or more points.
? Henderson has now made at least five field goals in each of the last four games. He is shooting .556 (25-of-45) during that timeframe.
? With eight rebounds Henderson has recorded three or more rebounds in nine games this year and in 53 career games. The eight rebounds were the second most in a game this season for the junior. He had nine boards against Purdue.
? Henderson tallied four assists in the game, the fourth time this season he has dished out three or more assists.
? Henderson blocked a shot to give him at least one blocked shot in nine of the 13 games this season.
David McClure
? Senior David McClure pulled down five rebounds and now has a total of 12 rebounds in his last two games. He has three games this season with five or more rebounds.
Jon Scheyer
? Junior Jon Scheyer scored 11 points for his 10th double figure scoring game this season and 56th time in his career. He has scored 10 or more points in six straight games.
? Scheyer was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line and is now shooting .871 (54-of-62) from the charity stripe this season. He ranks second in school history with a .868 (289-of-333) career free throw percentage.
? With four rebounds Scheyer has grabbed three or more rebounds in 11 of the 13 games this season and in 61 career contests.
Kyle Singler
? Sophomore Kyle Singler finished the game with 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, one blocked shot and two steals. It is the seventh time this season he has posted at least one point, rebound, assist, blocked shot and steal in a game.
? Singler tallied 19 points on 7-of-11 from the field, 2-of-2 from the three-point line and 3-of-3 from the foul line. Singler has reached double figures in scoring in 12 of the 13 games on the year and in 37 career outings.
? For the sixth straight game, Singler tallied at least eight rebounds, pulling down a team-high eight on Sunday against Virginia Tech. He has at least five rebounds in all 13 games this year and in 36 career games.
? Singler matched a career high with seven assists to give him at least four assists in four of the last five games. He also had seven assists earlier this season against Georgia Southern. He has three or more assists in nine games this year and leads the team with 48 assists. He has already matched his freshman total of 48 assists through 21 fewer games.
? With two steals Singler now has two or more steals in five straight games and eight total games on the year. He leads the team with 29 steals on the season.
Nolan Smith
? Sophomore Nolan Smith finished with 13 points, giving him 10 games this season in double figures. He had just six games with 10 or more points as a freshman.
? Smith was a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line and has now made 30 of his 32 attempts (.938) on the year. He has made his last 10 free throw attempts.
