DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke Invitational wrapped up on Monday with Duke junior
Dylan Arnould claiming the singles championship and Elon's doubles team of Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec taking home the doubles title.
“I played pretty well through most of the weekend,” said Arnould. “I played solid on the bigger points. Today I was up early on the break and he snuck out a game and got some confidence. It was back-and-forth in the second set until I got a break at 6-5. I was able to get on him pretty early in the final set and stay up.”
Arnould lost the first set to North Carolina's Luke Mojica, 6-3, after taking an early 2-0 lead. The two players traded points on serve throughout the second set before Arnould broke serve to win the set 7-5. The third set was all Arnould as he cruised to a 6-1 victory and win the tournament championship with 24 points. He was 3-0 in singles on the weekend and improves to 7-6 on the season. The Blue Devils have won the singles title in the Duke Invitational in each of the past two years.
Kiril Dimitrov earned the championship last season.
“Dylan played great this weekend,” said head coach
Ramsey Smith. “He had a tough start today and lost the first set. He was behind the whole time in the second set but hung in there and Mojica was playing really well. Dylan just kept the pressure and eventually his opponent broke down and he played an amazing third set to win 6-1. He was really consistent and I was happy with how he played.”
Overall the Blue Devils won five of the eight singles matches on Monday and three of the four doubles contests. In the tournament, Duke earned victories in 23 of the 27 singles matches and nine of the 13 doubles matches.
“It was a perfect way to start the year,” said head coach
Ramsey Smith. “Everyone got a lot of matches and a lot of experience. We were fortunate to get quite a few wins, losing only four singles matches in three days. I was happy with the way the guys played and competed. The guys hit the ball really well and the doubles looked better each day. It is exactly what I was hoping to get out of it.”
Duke had two players go undefeated in doubles and seven players win all of their singles contests. Sophomore
Jared Pinsky and freshman
David Holland were the only players to win ever singles and doubles match. Pinsky and Holland were both 6-0 overall on the weekend. Pinsky won all three of his singles matches in straight sets while Holland pulled out two three-set matches. Also going undefeated in singles were Arnould (3-0),
Torsten Wietoska (3-0),
Luke Marchese (3-0),
Aaron Carpenter (2-0) and
David Lue (1-0).
The Blue Devils will begin the dual match season on Thursday when they take on Elon at 6 p.m. in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
