MALIBU, Calif. ? Duke junior Amanda Granson won two prequalifying singles matches to lead the Blue Devils in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at Malibu, Calif. on Saturday.
Granson began the day with a three set win over Sarah Lancaster of Texas 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the second round, Granson faced Kentucky's Sarah Woestmann and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win. With the win, Granson will need one more victory to advance to the qualifying stages. She will be back in action on Sunday.
“"Amanda played well,” said head coach Jamie Asheworth. “She had a battle in the first round. She had to change her game and be more patient than she likes to be. She did a good job going to her plan B game. In the second round she played well and smart. She served well and was more aggressive. She is confident in how she is playing."
Two other Blue Devils competed in singles but lost their opening matches. Melissa Mang lost to Georgia's Nadja Gilchrist in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and Jessi Robinson fell to Stephanie Dalmacio of Wichita State in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Duke's lone doubles team to compete on Saturday was Robinson and Tara Iyer. The duo earned a first round 8-4 win over Idunn Hertzberg and Katariina Touhimaa of TCU. Robinson and Iyer will need to win twice on Sunday to earn a trip to the qualifying rounds.
Sunday will mark the end of prequalifying for the All-American Championships. Winners of Sunday's matches will advance to the qualifying round which will be held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
