DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke men's tennis team will be in Athens, Ga. this weekend to compete for the first time this fall at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
The individual tournament is being hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Three Blue Devils were ranked in the ITA Preseason rankings and will be starting their 2008-09 season.
Sophomore Reid Carleton is ranked No. 39 to start the season. He received the No. 6 seed in the Division I bracket and will receive a first round bye. Carleton led the Blue Devils last season with a 27-9 singles record.
No. 103 Kiril Dimitrov, a senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, was 16-17 last year. He is the No. 13 seed in the Division I bracket and will begin his final season against Virginia Tech's Nicolas Delgado DeRobles in the round of 64.
Junior Dylan Arnould and freshman Torsten Wietoska will also receive byes in the first round of the Division I bracket. Arnould is scheduled to face Georgia Tech's Ryan Smith in the round of 64. He was 18-15 in singles a year ago. Wietoska will make his collegiate debut against Jerry Sandgren of Morehead State in the second round.
Jared Pinsky will be competing in the first round of the Division I bracket. He is scheduled to open the tournament against Florida's Eric Corace. Pinsky was 9-10 in his first collegiate season.
Three Duke players will be competing in the Division II singles bracket. Sophomores Alain Michel and Christopher Price each received byes in the first round. Michel will face Jack Roux of USC-Upstate in the round of 64 and Price goes up against Henrik Willers of Lander for his first match. Freshman Luke Marchese will make his collegiate debut in the round of 64 against Daniel Knause of Furman.
Juniors Aaron Carpenter and David Lue will compete in the Division III bracket. Carpenter is set to face Lander's Juan Manrique in the first round while Lue will go head-to-head with Stewart McRae of UT-Martin in the second round.
In doubles Carleton and Price are the No. 3 seed and will open the Division I bracket with a bye and then will face Morgenstern-Wolff of Wake Forest. The Duke pair are ranked No. 36 in the ITA Preseason doubles rankings. Arnould and Wietoska are also a top eight seed and have a bye in the opening round. Dimitrov and Michel are set to square off against O-Brien-Girling of Tennessee Tech in the second round.
Pinsky and Carpenter are the top seed in the Division II bracket. They are joined by Lue and Marchese in the draw. Lue and Marchese will open against Vaz-Souza of Jacksonville in the first round.
The tournament runs Friday-Sunday. The opening day will feature the first two rounds of both singles and doubles.
