DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke junior Elisabeth Redmond collected two goals as the 10th-ranked Blue Devil women's soccer team registered a 4-0 victory over Campbell on Friday evening at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils improved to 2-0-0, while the Camels fell to 0-1-1.
Duke came out on the attack early as Redmond found herself in a one-v-one position with Campbell goalkeeper Boomie Luck. A product of Morristown, N.J., Redmond made a move to her left to go around the goalkeeper, but Luck was able to get a hand up when Redmond shot and batted the ball away.
Over the first 22 minutes, the Blue Devils maintained a constant attack on the Camel defense as Duke notched six shots, which one hit the crossbar, one was blocked and Luck posted four saves. Finally, at the 23:17 mark, Redmond posted her second goal of the season off a rebound to give Duke a 1-0 lead.
“Since we scored nine goals last game, I think we were pretty prepared that they were going to sit in on us a little bit and it was going to be harder to generate as much offense,” said Redmond. “I think we did a good job of adjusting. There was more space for the midfield to play in because they were sitting back and marking our forwards a lot more.”
The Blue Devils went on to take another 16 shots in the first half to finish with a total of 23 shots in the first 45 minutes of action. During that period, Duke hit another post and the Campbell keeper collected seven more saves to finish with 11 in the first stanza. The Blue Devil defense held strong as the Camels did not attempt a shot.
“Their goalie played really well,” said Redmond. “She had a great game. I am really happy with all shots that we had and the opportunities we generated. I don't think that anyone was disappointed in that.”
Coming off registering nine goals in the season opener against Coastal Carolina on 23 shots, the Blue Devils couldn't get the ball in the net in the first half like the game before.
“I think we were off a little bit tonight,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “You are going to have those nights. I mean we were not the sharpest. I will take a 35-shot to nothing and a 4-0 win any day of the week over here. We have some talent here, have some things going and we had some combination play [tonight]. In this game, they are not always going to go in. We have to keep our heads and keep attacking and attacking. I thought we backed away from attacking a little bit more [tonight]. If we are not attacking I am not going to be happy. I would rather make some mistakes by attacking and that is the mind-set I want this team to have.”
The second half was a different story as Duke notched three goals on 12 shots to post a 4-0 victory. Redmond continued the scoring barrage to open the year as she notched her third goal in just two matches off assists from KayAnne Gummersall and Cody Newman. Redmond was able to chip the ball over the goalkeeper's head from 25 yards away for her 14th career tally in the 52nd minute.
Just four minutes later, Redmond was fouled in the box and the Blue Devils were awarded their first penalty kick of the season. Junior Jane Alukonis took the attempt and beat Luck to the right corner of the net for her second career goal.
Freshman Chelsea Canepa closed the scoring for the Blue Devils just 48 seconds after entering the match as she one-timed the ball into the right side of the netting from 15 yards out, off an assist from sophomore Carey Goodman. The assist was Goodman's second of the season.
Duke finished the contest with a 35-0 shot advantage and a 9-0 lead in corner kicks. In two games so far this season, the Blue Devil defense has allowed zero goals and only four shots.
“The defense looks really good,” said Alukonis. “Our coach Carla Overbeck has been working a lot with the backs and their shape. Everyone always steps and has been covering when other people step. Our midfielders have been tracking really well so our defensive shape looks really good. I don't even think they got behind our backs so that says a lot.”
In goal for the Blue Devils, senior Cassidy Powers notched her second straight victory as she played 61:05 minutes, while freshman Emily Nahas saw action in the final 28:55 of the match. Luck totaled 14 saves in the match for Campbell.
Once again, a total of 23 student-athletes saw action in the contest for the Blue Devils. Fifteen different Duke players took shots on the evening with Redmond leading the action with six. Senior Lorraine Quinn added five, while Newman, Rebecca Allen, Kelly Hathorn and Kendall Bradley took three shots.
Duke will conclude a three-game homestand to open the season on Sunday as the Blue Devils will host UNC Greensboro at 6:00 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. Beginning this season, all Blue Devil home soccer contests will be ticketed events. Tickets will be $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for youth, while Duke students will have free admission with valid identification.
