WILMINGTON, N.C.? In the only exhibition contest of the 2008 preseason, the 16th-ranked Duke women's soccer team registered a 1-0 victory at UNC Wilmington on Saturday evening at the UNCW Soccer Stadium in Wilmington, N.C.
Over the first 45 minutes, the Blue Devils posted a 7-5 shot advantage but neither team found the back of the net. The first 16 minutes were very exciting with a combined seven shots, including one save, three blocks and one hit post by Duke senior Lorraine Quinn.
The second stanza opened with a corner kick by the Blue Devils and then sophomore Kendall Bradley hit the crossbar in the first two minutes and nine seconds. Quinn would then find the back of the net at the 63:52 mark from an assist from freshman Cody Newman. A product of Farmingdale, N.Y., Quinn hit the lower right hand corner of the net for the lone goal of the evening.
Duke closed the match with a 15-8 shot advantage and an 11-3 lead in corner kicks.
“We have a lot of work to do, but this game also showed we have a lot of potential,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “We had a number of great opportunities and they will come. We still don't have everyone 100 percent out there but we played a lot of people tonight and we got to look at a lot of different combinations.”
The Blue Devils played 21 players on the evening, while freshman Emily Nahas and senior Cassidy Powers each saw action in 45 minutes in goal. Nahas collected one save on five shots and Powers totaled two saves on three shots.
Duke will next open the regular season on Sunday, Aug. 24 with a 5:00 p.m., against Coastal Carolina. The match will take place at Koskinen Stadium. Beginning this season, all Blue Devil home soccer contests will be ticketed events. Tickets will be $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for youth, while Duke students will have free admission with valid identification.
