DURHAM, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Duke women's tennis team will square off against eighth-ranked California on Thursday, May 15 in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. First serve is set for 2 p.m. ET at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Duke served as a host for the opening rounds of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships and the Blue Devils dominated first and second round competition by defeating Atlantic-10 Champion Temple, 4-0, on May 9 and 24th-ranked William & Mary, 4-1, on May 10 to advance to the NCAA Championship Sweet Sixteen. California owns an overall mark of 18-5 and the Golden Bears, who also had home court advantage in opening round play, defeated Army and LSU each by 4-0 decisions last weekend.
A Glance At the Field
Duke has faced five of the other 15 teams in the Sweet Sixteen on six occasions, posting a 3-3 record with wins over Miami, Florida and Georgia Tech and losses to Northwestern and Clemson (2). The only other blemish on the Blue Devils' 20-4 record is a 4-3 loss on the road to Florida State.
Duke in the NCAA Tournament
Duke is appearing in its 19th consecutive and 20th overall NCAA Championship, as the Blue Devils have previously been a member of the field of 64 in 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Duke has compiled a 37-19 overall record in its 20 NCAA Championship appearances. The Blue Devils have reached the Final Four six times (1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2003) and have appeared in the championship match on one occasion (1998). Duke has been knocked out by the eventual national champion nine times (Stanford in 1988, 1997, 2004 and 2006; Florida in 1992, 1998 and 2003; Texas in 1993; and Georgia in 1994).
Ashworth In The NCAA
Head coach Jamie Ashworth has put together a 28-11 (.718) NCAA Tournament record while at the helm of the Duke program. During Ashworth's tenure, Duke has been to four Final Fours, advancing to the championship match in 1998. He last guided the Blue Devils to the Final Four in 2003, the same year that Duke captured the National Team Indoor Championship title. Ashworth has coached one NCAA individual champion in Vanessa Webb, who won the 1998 singles title. Webb, a 1999 Honda Award recipient, was named the National Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999 under Ashworth's tutelage and later went on to represent Canada in the 2000 Olympics.
The ACC In The 2008 NCAA Tournament
Eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams were selected to compete in the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship, marking the ninth year in a row and the 10th time in the last 11 years the league has had at least five representatives in the national postseason tournament. In 2007, Georgia Tech became the first ACC school to win a national title in women's tennis and collected the No. 3 overall seed in this year's tournament . Other ACC teams getting an at-large bid to the NCAA this year include Duke, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, N.C. State and Wake Forest. Duke, Clemson, Miami and Georgia Tech have all reached the Sweet Sixteen.
Duke In The 2008 NCAA Individual Championships
On April 20 the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams to compete in the 2008 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships, as Duke freshmen Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka and sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin were selected to the singles field and the Blue Devil duo of sophomore Amanda Granson and junior Melissa Mang were selected to the doubles field. Nze, Zsilinszka and Plotkin each received at-large bids for the singles portion of the event, while Granson and Mang received the No. 8 seed for the doubles competition, thus earning All-America honors. Plotkin will be unavailable for postseason play. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 21-26 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., following the conclusion of the team championship.
