Durham, N.C. ? Duke senior guard DeMarcus Nelson will be a member of the National squad on Friday when the nation's top seniors will play in the DiGiorno College All-Star basketball game at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
A total of 22 seniors have been divided into the American and National teams for the game, which will be played at 5 p.m. (CDT) and will be televised on CSTV. Nelson will play for Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell, who will lead the National team. Former South Carolina head coach Dave Odom will coach the American squad.
Nelson, a native of Elk Grove, Calif., led Duke to a 28-6 overall record and 13-3 mark in the ACC. The Blue Devils won the Maui Invitational Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He led the team in scoring (14.5 ppg.), field goals made and attempted (172-of-351), free throws attempted (183) and steals (53). He was also second with 110 made free throws, 197 rebounds (5.8 rpg.) and 100 assists.
Nelson finished his college career ranked 33rd on Duke's all-time scoring list with 1,336 career points. He also finished 28th with 606 career rebounds. He is one of only six players in school history to record over 1,300 points, 600 rebounds, 200 assists and 125 steals in a career.
