Altamonte Springs, Fla. ? Second-seeded Duke advanced to the ACC Championship semifinals on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win over seventh-seeded Virginia at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Duke won the doubles point on the strength of victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The freshman tandem of Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka defeated Hampton Williams and Lara Alexander at the bottom spot, 8-5, but the Cavalier pair of Amanda Rales and Jennifer Stevens got past senior Tory Zawacki and junior Jessi Robinson, 8-5, at No. 2 before sophomore Amanda Granson and junior Melissa Mang clinched the point for the Blue Devils with an 8-5 victory over Maggie Yahner and Lindsey Pereira at the top spot.
Singles action saw Virginia tie the score at 1-1 as Stevens defeated Nze, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 but Duke rallied to post three straight victories to take the 4-1 win.
Sophomore Tara Iyer got past Rales, 6-1, 6-2, at the top singles position to put Duke on top 2-1 and Mang defeated Yahner, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 before Granson posted a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Alexander at No. 5 to give Duke the victory.
The Blue Devils (17-3) will meet the winner of a quarterfinal match between third-seeded Miami and sixth-seeded Florida State in semifinal action on Saturday at 1 p.m.
