HONOLULU, Hawai'i ? The 13th-ranked Duke women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip with a 5-2 win over 20th-ranked Tennessee at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Saturday.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 9-1 (2-0 ACC) on the year, as head coach Jamie Ashworth picked up his 250th win. Ashworth now owns a record of 250-61 at Duke.
Doubles action saw the Blue Devils go ahead 1-0, as the third-ranked duo of sophomore Amanda Granson and junior Melissa Mang defeated the seventh-ranked tandem of Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor, 8-5, at No. 1 before junior Jessi Robinson and senior Tory Zawacki posted an 8-5 win over Connor Vogel and Jennifer Meredith at the No. 3 spot to clinch the point for Duke.
Tennessee's pair of Ghizella Schutte and Rosalia Alda was victorious at No. 2, as the tandem posted an 8-6 win over Duke's freshman duo of Ellah Nze and Reka Zslinszka.
No. 14 Nze put the Blue Devils up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Samantha Orlin at the No. 2 position, before Granson posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vogel at No. 5 to increase Duke's advantage to 3-0.
The Lady Vols got a win from No. 61 Whoriskey at the top singles spot, as she got past sophomore Tara Iyer, 7-6, 6-4, to make the score 3-1 in favor of Duke. UT then cut it to 3-2 as Zawacki fell to Alda, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 6 before 16th-ranked Zsilinszka clinched the victory for the Blue Devils with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Zubor at No. 3.
Action at No. 4 saw Mang pick up a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Meredith to account for the final score.
Next up for Duke will be three straight home matches, as the Blue Devils face face a trio of ACC foes in five days. Duke will meet N.C. State on March 19 (4 p.m.), Georgia Tech on March 22 (12 p.m.) and Clemson on March 23 (3 p.m.) with all contests set to be played at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.
