SORRENTO, FLA. ? Led by a team-best second round six-under-par total of 282 on Monday, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team vaulted to the top of the leaderboard at the UCF Challenge to Benefit Florida Children's Hospital and now leads by eight strokes with 18 holes remaining. Blue Devil sophomore Alison Whitaker also continues to lead the individual action by one stroke at the 6,301-Yard, Par 72 RedTail Golf Club.
Trailing fourth-ranked Southern California by a stroke entering the day, a trio of Blue Devils all finished under par to help the three-time defending champions to a 36-hole total of 12-under-par, 564. In the two rounds, Duke has totaled six-under-par totals of 282 on both days with a total of 31 birdies. Rounding out the top 10 is Purdue (572), Southern California (575), Florida (575), UCLA (577), Pepperdine (580), Georgia (580), Alabama (581), Oklahoma State (582) and Auburn (583).
“We were just talking as a team and the one thing that I can say about our team is we are a smart golf team,” Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks said. “We have had different winds each day out here and I think the reason we played well today is they figured out the golf course.”
Whitaker, who came off registering a career-best round of 65 on Sunday, held onto her lead in the race for medalist honors through 36 holes by shooting an one-under-par, 71. After going par, bogey and birdie to start her day off, Whitaker played the next six holes at two-under-par with birdies on the third, fifth and seventh holes to make the turn at two-under-par, 34. A product of Melbourne, Australia, Whitaker posted three bogeys and two birdies on the back nine to close with a 71. She notched two straight under-par rounds for the second time this season and third time in her career. Whitaker will be looking for her first career tournament victory if she can hold onto the lead on Tuesday.
Looking to claim individual medalist honors for the second straight tournament and second consecutive time at the UCF Challenge, Blue Devil junior Amanda Blumenherst carded a four-under-par, 68, and is now in second; just one shot off Whitaker's lead. Blumenherst has posted rounds of 69 and 68 for a total of seven-under-par, 137. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native collected four birdies on both sets of nine holes without any blemishes. Over 36 holes, Blumenherst has totaled only one bogey, while featuring 28 pars, six birdies and one eagle.
Coming off a two-over-par, 74, on Sunday, junior Jennie Lee registered a three-under-par, 69, on day two and is tied for 13th with a 143. Lee, who is from Henderson, Nev., made the turn at one-under-par, 35, registered birdies on her final two holes to close with a 69. On the day, she posted a total of five birdies.
Both senior Jennifer Pandolfi and freshman Kim Donovan each posted rounds of 74 on Monday. Pandolfi is tied for 53rd with a 149, while Donovan is tied for 42nd with a 148.
Playing as an individual, Yu Young Lee is tied for 92nd with a 161, after totaling a round of 76 on day two.
Duke will tee off on Tuesday in the final round beginning at 10:09 a.m., along with Purdue and Florida.
