ATLANTA - The Duke men's swimming & diving team came out strong on the first day of the 2008 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships, as the Blue Devils broke two relay school records in as many events on Wednesday evening at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
The Duke foursome of sophomore David Hahn, junior Jordan Charles, freshman Nick Garvy and senior Ryan Packer set a school record for the 200 medley relay touching in 1:31.33 for a ninth place finish. The squad bested the previous record of 1:31.59, set in 2005 by David Peck, Kevin Arthofer, John Humphrey and Billy Pearce.
Action for the 800 freestyle relay saw freshmen Andy Osterland and Spencer Booth, sophomore Sean Smith, and senior Scott Champagne finish in 6:45.00 to take eighth place. The quartet broke the previous Duke-best mark of 6:48.47 set in 2004 by Humphrey, Trevor Yates, Teddy Helfers and Jay Ashenfelter.
Day two of the ACC Championships resumes Thursday with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m.
