TUCSON, ARIZ. ? With 18 holes remaining at the Wildcat Invitational, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team sits in second place and only four shots off the lead at the 6,238-yard, Par 71 Arizona National. The teams competing on Tuesday had to deal with average winds at approximately 20 miles per hour, which led to increased overall scores.
Duke turned in a second round 302 on Tuesday and owns a 36-hole total of 590, which is second behind Oklahoma State's two-day total of 586. Rounding out the top-10 includes Arizona (596), Southern California (596), Arizona State (603), New Mexico (605), Auburn (606), UCLA (609), Pepperdine (609) and Stanford (617).
“It was real windy today,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “Due to resurfaced greens which were hard and the wind, that combination made it tough to play today. We tried to stay patient and make some pars. In conditions like that, you cannot let bogey's and double-bogeys get you down. You have to stay patient.”
First round individual leader Amanda Blumenherst turned in a one-over-par, 72, on the second day and increased her lead to three-strokes with a 36-hole total of 140. After recording five birdies on the first day, Blumenherst had only one birdie on Tuesday, which occurred on the 496-yard, par five 18th hole. Looking for her 10th career victory, Blumenherst also had 15 pars and two bogeys on the day.
Fellow junior Jennie Lee totaled her second straight round of 74 and is tied for 10th overall in the individual action. Lee, who is from Henderson, Nev., posted one birdie, one double-bogey, two bogeys and five pars over her first nine holes to make the turn at three-over-par, 35. Over the final nine holes, Lee totaled one birdie, one bogey and seven pars to close the back nine at even par.
After posting a 72 on Monday, senior Jennifer Pandolfi notched a 77 on the second day. She is now tied for 15th with a total of 149. A product of Navarre, Fla., Pandolfi settled down after collecting a 41 on the front nine to post one bogey, while playing the final seven holes at one-under-par.
Sophomore Alison Whitaker had a 79 on Tuesday, while freshman Kim Donovan posted an 84. Whitaker is tied for 32nd with a 153 and Donovan is tied for 66th with a 161. Playing as an individual, sophomore Yu Young Lee is tied for 53rd after posting rounds of 75 and 83 for a total of 158.
Duke will tee off on Wednesday in the final round beginning at 8:00 a.m. (MST) along with Oklahoma State, Arizona and Southern California in a shotgun start.
