DURHAM, N.C. ? GoDuke.com recently sat down with sophomore Nolan Smith for a Q&A. Smith, a native of Upper Marlboro, Md., discusses his favorite Christmas movie, his favorite holiday, his favorite part about playing basketball at Duke, plus much more.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite Christmas carol?
Nolan Smith: Joy to the World.
GD: What is your favorite Christmas movie?
NS: A Christmas Story.
GD: What holiday traditions do you have in your family?
NS: When we were younger we'd always go to New York and shop and then take the train back to Maryland. This was when I was in middle school and high school.
GD: What is your favorite holiday?
NS: Thanksgiving.
GD: What's the best present you ever received?
NS: Probably my first basketball when I was three or four. I still have it in the house. I never lost it.
GD: What do you watch on TV?
NS: Spongebob Square Pants. I have Spongebob shoes, a jacket, and a toothbrush. I like Spongebob.
GD: What music do you listen to?
NS: All kinds ? I listed to rap, R&B, gospel, pop. Anything really.
GD: What is your favorite movie?
NS: Love & Basketball and The Wizard of Oz.
GD: What websites do you visit most?
NS: YouTube, of course. Everybody goes on there. And ESPN.com.
GD: What was your first job?
NS: Basketball.
GD: What is your favorite meal?
NS: Fried chicken and macaroni and cheese.
GD: What talent would you most like to have?
NS: Singing. I love to sing. I sing in the shower, sing in the car. I sing all the time.
GD: Who is your favorite athlete to watch in another sport?
NS: Lance Armstrong. I love watching him.
GD: What is your favorite city to visit?
NS: Miami.
GD: What was your favorite sports team growing up?
NS: Los Angeles Lakers.
GD: Who is your hero?
NS: My father. He accomplished everything that I want to accomplish ? won a national championship in college, had a career in the NBA, just a great person and raised a great family, and did good things with his life.
GD: What is your motto?
NS: Live every day like it's your last.
GD: What is your favorite part about playing basketball at Duke?
NS: The tradition and just the excitement the University brings to games ? The Crazies. And just wearing that jersey every day means so much.
GD: What is your favorite class ever taken at Duke?
NS: My human development class.
GD: What is your favorite thing about playing in Cameron Indoor Stadium?
NS: The Crazies. They bring the excitement and I feel like they make Cameron what it is. I definitely listen to them ? it keeps me loose.
GD: Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
NS: The Duke Gardens. I go there from time to time just to walk around, sit down, take a break and get away.
