DURHAM, N.C. ? GoDuke.com recently sat down with junior Martynas Pocius for a Q&A. Pocius, a native of Vilnius, Lithuania, discusses his favorite Christmas movie, holiday traditions, his favorite holiday, plus much more.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite Christmas carol?
Martynas Pocius: I don't know many of them because I came here [the United States] five years ago, but I just like Christmas music in general.
GD: What is your favorite Christmas movie?
MP: I just saw Four Christmases in the theater, but I wouldn't say that's my favorite. It's probably something with Jim Carrey. Maybe The Grinch.
GD: What holiday traditions do you have in your family?
MP: When I was home for Christmas we'd get together at my grandparents with all my cousins and aunts and uncles and have a nice dinner on Christmas Eve. Then we'd have a traditional Christmas morning with the family.
GD: What is your favorite holiday?
MP: Probably New Years, because back home in Lithuania it's really big, different than here. It's a lot like the Fourth of July, a lot of fireworks and a great atmosphere.
GD: What's the best present you ever received?
MP: It's not a present necessarily, but I had a great 21st surprise birthday party thrown by my girlfriend. All my teammates were there.
GD: What do you watch on TV?
MP: I'll watch Prison Break, Entourage, The Office, Heroes.
GD: What music do you listen to?
MP: All different stuff ? not as much techno or European music or country. A little bit of pop, hip-hop, and some good oldies.
GD: What is your favorite movie?
MP: I'm very into movies so there's too many. I don't have one favorite.
GD: What websites do you visit most?
MP: GoDuke.com, and basketball news sites, just keeping up with what's going on in Lithuania. I don't go on to just browse very often because I don't have a lot of time.
GD: What was your first job?
MP: Never really had one. Basketball is a full-time job.
GD: What is your favorite meal?
MP: A traditional Lithuanian meal of cepelinai. It's baked potato dumplings with meat inside. It has a lot of grease. It tastes phenomenal, and my mom and grandmother make it. I'm excited for my mom to come visit in a month so she can make it. I don't know if you can find all the ingredients here but I hope she can.
GD: What talent would you most like to have?
MP: It'd be nice to be able to fly. But seriously, I'd love to be able to play an instrument like piano or guitar. I'm really into music so I'd love that.
GD: Who is your favorite athlete to watch in another sport?
MP: it used to be Pete Sampras. But now I watch Tiger Woods. I watched him last night and it's amazing. It's late at night and you want to turn it off, but when he's on you just can't stop watching.
GD: What is your favorite city to visit?
MP: Vilnius, my hometown. I'm kind of a visitor there now.
GD: What was your favorite sports team growing up?
MP: The Chicago Bulls, with Jordan and Pippin and all them.
GD: Who is your hero?
MP: I was always inspired by my dad. He played basketball and I would watch him a lot, and he became kind of my personal coach. It meant a lot to me.
GD: What is your motto?
MP: It's not so much a motto but I try to live by the second, don't look too far ahead, because you never know what's going to happen.
GD: What is your favorite part about playing basketball at Duke?
MP: The tradition and atmosphere here.
GD: What is your favorite class ever taken at Duke?
MP: My international comparative studies seminar. It was a discussion class with some great readings. It was a great class.
GD: What is your favorite thing about playing in Cameron Indoor Stadium?
MP: The Crazies and the atmosphere, no doubt about that.
GD: Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
MP: I'm not on campus a lot right now because I live off-campus, but it used to be The Loop. We used to hang out there a lot.
